LOH Weekly Contest #253

The first prompt from @saffisara struck me as quite interesting, as it raises an important issue that many of us tend to overlook.

A survival situation isn’t limited to something like a zombie apocalypse, where—just like in the series—you have to stay constantly alert to survive.

Often, emergencies that require survival skills are far less spectacular than disaster movies or TV shows, but they’re no less challenging.

In my case, although I tend to imagine that anything from natural disasters to the collapse of civilization due to nuclear war could happen at any moment, I lack the basic skills or competencies to survive on my own beyond the first few hours.

My sense of direction is nonexistent—I never intuitively know where north is, and I’d need to see the sunset or sunrise to orient myself. I’ve even gotten lost while using Google Maps.

Starting a fire without a matchbox would be impossible for me, and let’s not even talk about eating animals, because I’d be incapable of killing them.

Without a doubt, being prepared for emergency situations is something we should all learn. Even with all the technology available today, we’ve already witnessed that prolonged power outages—and consequently internet outages—can happen anytime, anywhere. And in those moments, we become completely analog again.

There are many ways to prepare for emergency situations, stacking up food and emergency tools, medicin etc at home. That is a important thing, but without skills in doing things like learning to build a shed, to make a fire without matches, cook without stove it can be Hard.

I have tools at home that you can use to start fire without matches or lighter, and a gasol kitchen if the electricity goes out.
But in nature.. I am like you.
I can fish, but to kill a bigger animal... I couldn’t 🙈
I Loove animals... Lol

Thank you for sharing and giving us things to think about. Have a wonderful week. Cheers 🌷

Yeah, that are essentially the minimum we should have at home, I remember when I was in a survivor forum, people also have the 3 days emergency backpacks hidden in a nearest zone... But as you said, know how to build refuge and make fire in nature is elemental for survive in nature, and know about savages fruits.

Thanks for your kindly support 🙏😸❤️

Preparation? Yes, that was what I have already done.
I live in a region of Canada that has been susceptible to earthquakes and tsunami and our officials warned everyone to make preparations amounting to at least three days worth of food, water, and essentials in the event of a major earthquake that would damage power, water distribution and an estimated minimum loss of 50% of buildings and homes. From recent examples all over the world I estimated four weeks as more realistic. I stocked sufficient food, a special water filter system, a tent, fuel heating and a solar powered generator as starting point. I hope it doesn't happen in winter.

Two winters ago there was an upper Fraser valley flood and it took far too long, much more than three days, for the Government to mobilize. That would be small compared to a magnitude 8+ earthquake could do. Victims were literally left out in the cold.

Good citizens had to step in where Government failed, so I won't fully rely on the authorities but expect to rely on our neighbors and ourselves.

I can totally relate to this! The part about getting lost with Google Maps is so real 😅 Your point about how we become completely analog without technology is spot on ✨ It's a great, honest reminder that we all need to brush up on our skills 🙌

Yeah, you're right, we should begin brushing up some basic skills! Thanks for your kindly comment 😊
