Honestly, at the time I did not find the mistake very funny at all — quite embarrassing, actually — but I can say it taught me a lesson for life.

I was in the capital because I had to sit one of my last exams to finish my degree. By that point I had already moved to the countryside for work, and I stayed there to this day, with some intervals in between.

Back then I had a part-time job that paid very little, and to make things worse, I had to take a few days off without pay in order to travel and sit my exams.

The truth was that I was running pretty tight on money — just enough to do what I needed to do and get back home. There was no budget for any extras, not even a coffee. Sad times.

But as the saying goes, "the Devil is a pig" — a silly idea came to me, prompted by the opportunity right in front of me.

It turned out that I had to take two buses from the university to my sister's house, where I was staying, and my mandatory transfer stop was right across from a casino.

I naively thought I could double my money playing Blackjack. Which led me to learn the hard way the truth behind the famous saying: "The house always wins."

In short, I lost the money I had set aside for the return fare and had to borrow from my sister. One thing is certain though — I never set foot in a casino again.

Realmente en aquella oportunidad no me pareció muy gracioso el error, aunque sí bastante vergonzoso, pero puedo decir que me enseñó la lección para siempre.

Estaba yo en la capital porque tenía que rendir uno de mis últimos exámenes para terminar la carrera. Ya en aquella época me había mudado al campo por trabajo y me quedé hasta hoy, con ciertos intervalos.

En aquella época tenía un trabajo de medio tiempo en el que ganaba muy poco, y para peor, tuve que pedir un permiso de unos días, para poder viajar y rendir los exámenes, los cuales por supuesto no iba a cobrar.

Lo cierto era que estaba con el dinero bastante justo como para hacer lo que tenía que hacer y volver. No había presupuesto para ningún gusto, ni siquiera un café. Triste.

Pero como dice el dicho "el Diablo es puerco", se me ocurrió una idea absurda, promovida por la oportunidad.

Resulta que tenía que tomar dos buses desde la facultad hasta la casa de mi hermana, en la que me estaba quedando, y mi transbordo obligado quedaba justo frente a un casino.

Pensé ingenuamente que podría duplicar mi dinero jugando al Black Jack. Lo que me llevó a constatar por las malas la famosa frase de que "El casino nunca pierde".

En resumen, perdí el dinero que era para el pasaje de vuelta, y tuve que pedir un préstamo a mi hermana. Eso sí, nunca más entré a un casino.
