An Unexpected Visitor

Yesterday morning, I went over to the chicken coop to feed them and check if the chicks had hatched, which, in theory, should happen on September 21st.

To my great surprise, in the empty cage where we once kept quails, I found a comadreja¹.

The little visitor had sought out a safe place to bring her litter into the world. It’s incredible how clever she was—there she was, completely protected from my dogs and any other danger.

That day, while looking for 🐣, I stumbled upon a litter of opossums. It seemed the mother needed a bit of rest, to gather strength, so I left some dog food in the cage (it was the most appropriate thing I could find) and a jar of water on top of the other cage.

They spent the day—and perhaps the night—there, and by this morning, they had left. I hope they’re well, wherever they’ve gone, because despite their sharp teeth and unfriendly demeanor, opossums are quite useful in rural areas. They eat dangerous insects like scorpions, fleas, ticks, and even snakes.

Unfortunately, they suffer from a bad reputation and are exterminated as soon as they’re spotted. Poor things are so innocent that instead of fleeing, they freeze in the face of danger.

In my country, we have a veterinarian who’s famous on social media and known as Doctora Mykurê—“Mykurê” being the Guaraní word for opossum. She tries to educate people about these curious animals, who suffer from an undeserved bad reputation but are actually an important part of the ecosystem.

Una visita inesperada

Ayer por la mañana me acerqué al gallinero para llevarles la comida y para revisar si ya habían nacido los pollitos, que en teoría deberían nacer el 21 de setiembre.

Grande fue mi sorpresa cuando en la jaula vacía en la que alguna vez tuvimos codornices me encontré con una comadreja¹.

La pequeña visitante había buscado un lugar seguro para traer al mundo a su camada. Es increíble lo inteligente que fue, ya que ahí estaba totalmente a salvo de mis perros y de cualquier otro peligro.

Ese día buscando 🐣 me encontré con una camada de comadrejas. Al parecer la comadreja necesitaba descansar un poco, reunir fuerzas, así que le dejé comida para perro en la jaula (era lo más apropiado que encontré) y un tarro de agua sobre la otra jaula.

Pasaron el día y tal vez la noche allí, y esta mañana se habían marchado. Espero que estén bien a donde sea que hayan ido, porque a pesar de esos dientes afilados y su actitud de pocos amigos, las comadrejas son bastante útiles para lugares rurales, ya que se comen insectos peligrosos como alacranes, pulgas y garrapatas y hasta víboras.

Lamentablemente sufren de mala fama, y son exterminadas tan pronto como se las detecta. Las pobres son tan inocentes que en lugar de escapar se paralizan frente al peligro.

En mi país tenemos una veterinaria famosa en redes sociales a quien se conoce como Doctora Mykurê, que es la palabra en guaraní que significa comadreja, que intenta educar a la gente sobre estos curiosos animales, quienes gozan de una infundada mala fama, pero que en realidad forman parte importante de los ecosistemas.
