It's true that one feels exposed on their birthday; being the center of attention can be uncomfortable. Perhaps that's why I don't do anything to celebrate on most of my birthdays either.

That makes sense to me now and I feel we're taught to perform joy for others so well that we forget to extend ourselves the same permission.... maybe that's the quiet thing birthdays expose about us, not vanity, just how unused we are to being looked at without flinching
