How would you be with a man that actually beats you, abuses you, that actually does mean and odd things, to the extent of cutting you with knives and the rest of it all?

Tell me, why would you go and be with that person after advising us to stay off such men...

And now you're late, and now we are mourning over you, because you could not voice out your pain.

Okay, this is a true life story of my dear school mate

I'm so pained because she was a good person, not just to me, but people around her

She helped a lot of persons, even to an extent, she was self-sponsored but she could help you with payment of your school fees. She could help you with foodstuffs and she was really a nice person as she would push you to your success.

She was almost done with her NYSC, but before I knew it, I got a call that she's late.

How? Like what happened

At first, I had my blood pressure up, when I had the call, I was like, “Wait, is this a prank, or are you trying to prank me?”

Because this is a person I spoke with last week as we were supposed to have an hangout this weekend

So how and why is she late?

Idrain cannot play this kind of prank

It was getting serious, I had to ask what happened.

They said that the man, the claimed husband, pushed her down the stairs after flogging the hell out of her

And she was about six months gone, that's about 24 weeks and she could not tell any of us

Okay, fine, we are your friends, no doubt. If you can't tell us, why didn't you tell your parents? At least they would know what to do most especially your health first and your safety, at most why didn't you tell your mum, because she would know that you need to go to the hospital to have a thorough check up and to know what's wrong, especially then, you were pregnant.

So now, she didn't go to the hospital, and the man did not even care. The man was still beating her on top, ahhh what a heartless man. I mean no matter what she did to you, for the sake of the unborn child, you shouldn't lay your hands on her

After some weeks, she now had to go to the hospital because of the pains that came up

When she went to the hospital, they said the baby had long been dead during that interval, and she had serious internal bleeding.

They did surgery

It was at the point of surgery that the doctors were like, “I'm not sure this girl will survive because she has passed through internal injuries, more on her internal vital organs and she's weak as pertaining to much of internal bleeding but we will try."

You know, when doctors speak like that, you know that there is no way about it again, except God shows up

So before we knew it, the lady was gone, like under a blink of an eye lid

The mum upon hearing the bad news, the shock she got killed her on the spot, making it three people at a goal

Ahhhhh, why... I had so much rhetorical questions

I was just like, maybe it's a prank, that Idrain cannot be with an abusive person, she's too good and she knows how to deal with red flags

But we can't blame love or can we blame love?

But even though you couldn't open up to us, why didn't you tell your mom what happened?

Why didn't you?

You told us never you be with an abusive partner, why did you end up with one?

And now we are mourning you over a death that you were not supposed to have this year.

Rest on Idrain, we'll meet on the resurrection morning

That is the story of my dear school mate, a true life story

Now, so many things like this are actually happening in this our contemporary age, most especially in Africa, Nigeria. We have lost most of our women to abusive relationships and marriages 

Once a guy has money, some won't go ahead to check about the mental state of that person.

They don't check how he behaves when he is angry nor check how he treats people.

They don't check whether he respects women, they just see the money and believe everything will be fine.

But forgetting that it is, the mental state and character of that person that will determine how long you live and the kind of life you will have with that person.

Dear ladies, please look beyond the money, look at the person, know him, ask questions, observe how he behaves and don't ignore the red flags 

Because money is good, but your life is more important.

Don't wait until we are all gathered together, mourning you, asking, “Why didn't she tell us?”

Speak out and ask for help.

And if you are with an abusive partner, please don't keep quiet.

Your life is worth more than that.
