KEEPING THE LIGHTS ON IN VENEZUELA. Loh#298

A child who lived through an earthquake should not have to live through the cold - the world can't get organized in time to help!
It is a good reminder of us, in the midst of the natural disasters, how, though we may speak different languages, live in different cultures and have different borders, we are all human.

In Venezuela, the recent earthquake has wreaked havoc on many families and made it difficult for them to rebuild their lives. The children who have not only lost their homes, but their comfort of having their home, are among the most vulnerable. Even a cozy blanket or a flashlight during a dark night can make all the difference to them.

The question now is how do we continue to keep the door open for other countries to continue to donate for Venezuela to receive the assistance that it needs.

The initial step is to differentiate humanitarian aid from politics, I believe,
International aid frequently ends up being stuck in the political wranglings or in the economic sanctions. Governments can differ in their political views but they should not be the children's problem. Humanitarian relief should never be political and provide assistance to those in need irrespective of political circumstances.

Promoting good relations with trusted international organizations is also a crucial measure. The Red Cross, UNICEF and other trusted humanitarian organizations have systems in place to bring in emergency supplies. These organizations provide these assurances that donors can find when they give money to an organization, and know that their money will be directed to its intended recipients in a timely and effective manner.

Technology also has made it easier for everyday members of the public to assist. The internet, safe digital payment systems, and social media-based fundraising enables people all over the world to donate even if they can only do so in small amounts. Small acts of kindness add up to become big acts!, Financial support is just part of the answer, though.

Businesses can contribute blankets, solar-powered flashlights, clean water and hygiene kits.. Airlines and shipping companies may provide relief materials by using discounted or free air transport or shipping services.... Volunteers can be called to help coordinate logistics, and media outlets can go on covering the recovery after the news has passed.

A problem with relief efforts sometimes is that after a few days, the public is no longer interested. In many instances, donations stop as soon as there is another significant event that grabs the world's attention, despite the fact that survivors are still dealing with the repercussions, That's why it's important to have consistent support because Recovery doesn't occur in a week.

The stability, education, health care and emotional support that children are needing for months or years is what is needed when they have lost all of their possessions.

I may not have the ability to rebuild a house with my hands, as I am watching this tragedy unfold from another part of the world. I can, however, make a decision not to turn my head away. I can provide support for trusted organizations, I can ask others to give, and I can remind people that compassion doesn't expire!

In the end it's not just about raising funds that the door remains open to international donations.
It's about not shutting our hearts.

When the child wrapped in a donated blanket or turned on a flashlight from a stranger halfway around the globe, they are not only getting the items but also receiving more.

It's a strong message they're getting....
"You may be far away, but you are not alone."
