The Gray man review: Chaos ensues as ghost goes rogue
The gray man is a captivating 2022 movie released by Netflix. It is an action packed movie that would keep you at the edge of your seat. Of course, It was directed by the Russo Brothers who are popular for directing a lot of amazing movies including the Avengers movies.
It is safe to say that this movie is a constellation of stars as it boast of an array of star in its cast. This includes the likes of Ana de Armas, Ryan Gosling and even Chris Evans. In view of this, the question remains, does it deliver on the expected plot twists and character arcs? Or does it just depend solely on its star-studded cast?
The Plot: A thrilling chase
The gray man basically centers on a man trapped in middle of deadly game in which he can’t really trust anybody and everybody is potentially an enemy. Sierra Six (played by Ryan Gosling) was initially in prison, but was recruited by the CIA to work as an assassin for them. He becomes like a ghost, operating in the shadows and embarking on secret missions that require no mercy. Eventually, Sierra Six discovers dirty secrets about the people he works for, so he rebels. Now, having been flagged to be eliminated, Six must find a way to survive while his agency hunts him.
This is where Lloyd Hansen (portrayed by Chris Evans) comes in. Hansen is an ex CIA agent that is known for his sadistic trait. Hansen is recruited by the agency to hunt down Six. This introduces drama and chaos to the mix. While Six is calm and calculative, Hansen is Chaotic and Acts on impulse. Their clash is indeed a captivating one.
While the plot resembles that of popular action movies like the James Bond movies, this movie did not fail to deliver. It is packed with amazing fight scenes and fascinating twists.
The Cast and characters
Ryan Gosling’s portrayal of Sierra Six, the gray man, is a masterpiece. Six is a man of little words, but whenever he speaks, it makes impact. Ryan Gosling perfected the art of displaying the battle he faced inside without having to talk much. He didn’t need to be loud for people to understand his struggles or victories. In terms of physicality, Ryan Gosling as Sierra Six doesn’t rely on sheer force, rather he takes decisive, precise and well planned action.
Chris Evans acts as that villain we all to love to just hate. Chris’ character, Lloyd Hansen can be seen as an opposite to Six’s character. Lloyd Hansen is a perverse, cruel, brutal and volatile character. He is an ex CIA operative whose methods are full of mayhem. His jovial yet unstable nature bring some level of complexity to his character. He derives satisfaction in torturing people in the most inhumane ways. Having a combination of Six’s calmness and Hansen’s explosive nature gives the movie its allure.
Another character worthy of note is Danny Miranda who is portrayed by Ana de Armas. She is also a CIA agent who turns out to be an ally to Sierra Six. Ana de Armas shows that she can be that strong, resilient character on screen.
As mentioned earlier, the gray man is filled with a lot of action, intense chase, brutal fights, bullets being dodged and even explosions. I believe it is a must watch for lovers of intense action and spy movies. I rate it 8/10.
