Cuando John Carpenter estrenó "Escape de Nueva York" en 1981, el cine de acción no solo ganó una joya, sino que perdió la inocencia. No se trataba de otra aventura de rescate con héroes de mandíbula cuadrada; era una bofetada nihilista a la figura sagrada del Presidente y una visión, quizás demasiado cercana hoy en día, de la decadencia urbana. Aquí es donde la película se vuelve humana, o mejor dicho, inhumanamente real. Para la misión de "extracción", no envían a un Capitán América. Envían a Snake Plissken. Kurt Russell, con su parche en el ojo, creó al antihéroe definitivo. Snake no está allí por patriotismo (esa palabra le provoca náuseas), sino porque tiene el tiempo contado antes de que las micro-bombas en sus arterias lo borren del mapa. Es la personificación de la desilusión: un hombre al que el sistema traicionó y que ahora es el único que puede salvar a ese mismo sistema.
Como alguien que ama el cine, lo que más me fascina es el trato al mandatario. Donald Pleasence interpreta a un Presidente que, lejos de ser el mártir valiente, resulta ser un hombre asustado, vulnerable y, admitámoslo, bastante despreciable. Es refrescante y a la vez aterrador ver al "hombre más poderoso del mundo" reducido a un paquete que pasa de mano en mano.
La tensión no viene solo de los tiroteos o de las bandas lideradas por "El Duque". Viene del vacío emocional. Manhattan no es solo una ciudad en ruinas; es un organismo vivo que devora la esperanza. Carpenter nos sumerge en una atmósfera opresiva, iluminada por llamas de bidones y envuelta en esa banda sonora de sintetizadores que te golpea el pecho como un ritmo cardíaco mecánico.
El cierre de la película es, para mí, uno de los momentos más honestos de la historia del cine. Tras ver morir a sus amigos y arriesgar el pellejo, Snake logra la extracción. El Presidente, ya a salvo y recuperando su arrogancia, se prepara para un discurso triunfal sobre la paz mundial. Pero Snake, que ha visto la verdadera cara de la indiferencia del poder, tiene un último truco.
Ese intercambio final de cintas, cambiando el futuro del mundo por una vieja canción de jazz, es el acto de rebelión más puro que he visto en pantalla. Es Snake diciéndole al mundo: "Si vas a arder, hazlo con buena música".
"Escape de Nueva York" es más que una película sobre un presidente en peligro. Snake Plissken no es el héroe que queremos, pero es el tipo que necesitamos.

Carpenter immerses us in an oppressive atmosphere, illuminated by flames from oil drums and enveloped in that synthesizer soundtrack that pounds in your chest like a mechanical heartbeat.
The film's ending is, for me, one of the most honest moments in cinematic history. After watching his friends die and risking his own life, Snake manages the extraction. The President, now safe and regaining his arrogance, prepares for a triumphant speech about world peace. But Snake, who has seen the true face of power's indifference, has one last trick up his sleeve.
That final tape swap, trading the future of the world for an old jazz song, is the purest act of rebellion I've ever seen on screen. It's Snake telling the world, "If you're going to burn, do it with good music."
"Escape from New York" is more than a movie about a president in peril. Snake Plissken isn't the hero we want, but he's the kind of guy we need.
