Hello everyone! So this weekend there were a lot of new shows on Netflix. I watched the Old Guard 2 and the second season of Sandman to follow. The Old Guard 2 continues the story of immortal warriors introduced in 2020. The sequel attempts to expand the story and character arcs.
At the end of 2020's Old Guard, we saw Quynh, the second eldest immortal, escaped after centuries of imprisonment and teased as the villain for the sequel. She captures Booker, who betrayed the team in the first movie. Meanwhile, we are introduced to another immortal, Tuah, played by Henry Golding. He is kind of a historian who kept tabs on other immortals. Andy (Charlize Theron), is now mortal after losing her healing ability in the first film. We learn that the cause of this is Nile's powers. She has the ability to take away immortality once she injures them which she did to Andy in the first movie. We further learn that immortality can be transferred by an immortal to a person they choose. This transfer of immortality is the key plot of the sequel. Booker, wanting to be mortal, used this and transferred his powers to Andy.
Another immortal, Discord played by Uma Thurman, was actually the eldest among them. She is the first immortal and Nile, the last. Apparently, she also lost her immortality and plans to use Nile to regain it. At the end, she abducts all of the remaining immortals except for Andy who together with the now mortal Quynh, are on a quest to retrieve them in the next sequel.
I loved the first film and I was expecting a lot to the sequel. However, this movie is a bit disappointing. While I like Uma Thurman who was great in Kill Bill, it seems her character, Discord is shoe horned in this movie. It might have been better if the movie focused on Quynh's revenge arc and explored about her character more.
I remember in Star Trek Next Generations when Deanna Troi lost her emphatic powers. She was devastated and panicked like a person becoming blind. We don't see it here how Andy grapples with the loss of powers. She seems to be taking it in stride. I would have expected that she would be more hesitant, less confident for not having the power of immortality she depended on for centuries.
Uma Thurman was great in Kill Bill and I was hoping for a showdown between my two favorite girl bosses, Atomic Blonde and Beatrix Kiddo. Unfortunately, their fight scene in the end was short and showed their age. Also, I felt the movie dragged and got boring at some point and worse, it ended in cliffhanger. I don't think I can care to watch another sequel. This was a wasted potential.
