A little break from holiday movies to see a mystery thriller with a sprinkling of romcom is not a bad thing, I think. Often, the cast determines whether I'll see a movie or not, so seeing Lucy Hale on the poster of this recent release instantly caught my attention.
I first came across this actress from the popular teen mystery series, Pretty Little Liars and since then, I've rarely missed any of her movies. Popularly known for her romcom roles, it was surprising to see her take the lead in this film. Also, the title of the film seems unconventional for a mystery thriller but when you watch it, you'll understand the reason for this.
In F**** Marry Kill (2024), Eva Vaugh (played by Lucy Hale) just turned 30 and recently broke off an eight-year relationship with a local cop. She's not in a good place but with her friends' encouragement, she wants to start dating again. Her friend sets her up on a dating app and persuades her to go out with the men who matched her.
However, news of a serial killer on the loose is spreading all over town. There's a crime podcast that updates listeners on possible clues of the killer's operations. Eva and her friends are obsessed with this podcast but they are worried. What are the odds that one of Eva's men from the dating app might be the killer?
The plot of this movie is goodβa serial killer on the loose, bodies of single ladies piling up and thanks to a popular podcast giving out clues of the killer's moves, the protagonist may just be the next victim. I was intrigued merely from reading the synopsis and curious to see how Lucy Hale and the cast would bring this plot to life. When I started to watch, the storytelling and visuals were a letdown.
One positive is the cast's strong performances. Lucy Hale is cool, social and very chatty as expected of her character, Eva Vaugh. The men she dated are also attractive with a bit of creepy attitude and killer traits to keep the audience guessing. This kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure who the serial killer was before the end. The film threw some red herrings around and as expected of a good mystery, they beat me to it with an unexpected twist.
However, it's also about a serial murderer and I expected some tension and maybe scary or gory scenes but was disappointed. The storytelling turns out to be a mild mystery with romcom thrown in. On the one hand, Eva meets some fine men and struggles to choose who to βf**kβ, βmarryβ or 'kill' while on the other, a killer is murdering single ladies and she could be a good target.
As I earlier pointed out, Lucy Hale is more a romcom actress and it could be the reason the film turned towards this direction even though it sells the movie as a mystery thriller. And the final reveal of the killer falls flat and turns out to be more like a boring speech by one actor, telling how the murders are done. I cringed a little at this point as the scene felt amateurish.
The visuals are not bad but there are a few dark scenes that I wish they shot with bright lights instead.
Overall, F**** Marry Kill is not a bad movie and fans of Lucy Hale may enjoy it more. It's a chick flick meets a little mystery rather than a true thriller. I'd give it 2 stars out of 5.

The poster looked really really catchy. It's a pity the movie turned out that well. But I feel like these movies should just stick to one genre if they can't find a way to blend two more genres.
Combining two or more genres is okay if done right but in this case, I feel the blend of mystery thriller and romcom didn't turn out well. Still, it's not a bad film. π
I love a good plot twist, but if the killer's reveal is like a boring monologue, I might just βkillβ my plans to watch it π
Thanks for sharing this review pretty π
I enjoy a good plot twist too! Nah, don't let the final scene stop you from seeing the movie. It's not bad actually. π Thanks so much for your visit.
