De vuelta por aca para comentar de una película, que me gusto muchisimo cuando la vi, ha llovido bastante desde entonces, pero para mi es de esas que recuerdo con mucho cariño y satisfacción.

Es otra entrega protagonizada por Denzel Washington, está se llama "John Q" dicha cinta no es un drama cualquiera, y si un un aldabonazo en la conciencia; para mí el buen Cine es el que ademas de entretener, es el que inteligentemente consigue que el espectador sienta emociones, y valla que está consigue estrujarte las emociones, pero lo hace con una honestidad que duele, lo hace a punta de corazón y verdades incómodas, convirtiéndose un retrato descarnado, de lo que puede llegar a sentir una persona cuando el sistema lo deja sin opciones.
Podria decir que la historia no es muy enrevesada, aunque si tremenda. John Q. Archibald es uno de esos tantos padres de familia trabajador, de esos que conocemos, que madrugan y no escatiman esfuerzos, para sacar a los suyos adelante; dicha familia es chica, su esposa e hijo pequeño nombrado Mike, conviven con mucho amor en una casita modesta. Un día el chico jugando a la pelota se accidenta; al asistirlo en una entidad hospitalaria, le es diagnosticado una falla en el corazón, pero no una menor, sino una que necesita un trasplante de dicho organo con urgencia.

For me, good cinema is not only entertaining; it’s also smart enough to make the viewer feel emotions. And believe me, this one wrings your emotions dry. It does so with a painful honesty, with raw heart and uncomfortable truths, becoming a stark portrait of what a person can feel when the system leaves them no options.
I could say the story isn’t very convoluted, though it is tremendous. John Q. Archibald is one of those hardworking fathers we all know—the kind who gets up early and spares no effort to get his family ahead. His family is small: his wife and his young son, Mike, living together with a lot of love in a modest little house. One day, the boy has an accident while playing ball. When they take him to a hospital, he’s diagnosed with a heart condition—not a minor one, but one that requires an urgent transplant.
Para colmo de males, a la vez que demoledor de ánimos y espíritu, es que el seguro médico del hospital se niega a cubrir la operación, aduciendo que es demasiado cara, que "lo sienten" pero que no pueden hacer nada contra eso. Lo mejor del guión de esta trama, es que no se anda con medias tinta, te lanza a un ring de boxeo, en una esquina tienes a la familia de este hombre honrado y humilde, con las uñas sucias pero de trabajar, al otro extremo del cuadrilátero un sistema sanitario frío y burocrático, que por desgracia en ocasiones trata a las personas como simples números, un doctor de nombre Raymond y la directora del hospital son la cara de esa insensibilidad institucional, aunque sus personajes parecen un poco exagerados, aunque no sea la regla no es de dudar que existan, precisamente esa exageración es la que mueve a la indignación. Un punto bajo es que película tiende a empujarnos tanto hacia el protagonista, que hace se diluyan un poco los matices del resto de los demás personajes. Si llegaste hasta aquí y te pasa por la mente, pregúntate por los rehenes... pues como que de la noche al día se vuelven aliados de la pena y desesperación de John Q, aquí la mano de la dirección de la obra da su empujoncito para ganarnos la simpatía de los hechos, algo así como que cuando se trata de causa es justa, hay cosas que aunque puedan ser reprobables, también pueden perdonarse.
To make matters worse, and as crushing as it gets, the hospital’s insurance refuses to cover the operation, claiming it’s too expensive, that they’re “sorry” but there’s nothing they can do. Imagine that father—or try to put yourself in his shoes—a man of limited means, watching his son’s life fade with each new dawn. That drives him to a desperate decision: he gets a gun, storms the hospital’s emergency room, and takes several hostages. He’s not doing it for money, like some bank robber or family extortionist. What he asks for is a heart for his boy.
The best thing about this script is that it doesn’t pull any punches. It throws you into a boxing ring. In one corner, you have this honest, humble working-class family with dirt under their nails. In the opposite corner, a cold, bureaucratic healthcare system that unfortunately sometimes treats people like mere numbers. A doctor named Raymond and the hospital’s director are the faces of that institutional coldness. Though their characters seem a bit exaggerated, and even if it’s not the rule, it’s not hard to believe they exist. That exaggeration is precisely what fuels outrage. A low point is that the film pushes us so hard toward the protagonist that the nuances of the other characters get somewhat diluted. If you’ve made it this far and it crosses your mind—ask yourself about the hostages… well, they practically become allies of John Q’s pain and desperation overnight. Here, the director’s hand gives a little nudge to win our sympathy for the events. Something like: when the cause is just, some things, though perhaps reprehensible, can also be forgiven.
Denzel Washington es el tipo que pasa de la ternura de un padre orgulloso, a la desesperación contenida de quien atraviesa un estrecho desfiladero, su mirada cuando cree que ya no hay esperanza, te hace un nufo en la garganta; Robert Duvall quien hace de negociador policial, con un desempeño dira que bastante sólido, y Ray Liotta aporta su dosis de tensión; pero la película es de Denzel, exaltandola a un plano superior.
No se si sería era esa la intención del director Nick Cassavetes, pero logra ponerte como en un tin de nervios, la cámara casi siempre está cerca de los rostros, de las gotas de sudor, los ojos que se humedecen, conjugandose con una fotografía de tonalidad bastante fría, que refleja la angustia que cohabita el hospital; la música de Aaron Zigman es envolvente, de repente te das cuenta que estas mordiéndote los labios o por comerte alguna uña.
Denzel Washington is the guy who shifts from the tenderness of a proud father to the restrained desperation of someone crossing a narrow canyon. His look when he believes there’s no hope left makes a lump form in your throat. Robert Duvall plays the police negotiator with a performance I’d call quite solid, and Ray Liotta brings his dose of tension. But the film belongs to Denzel, elevating it to a higher plane.
I don’t know if that was director Nick Cassavetes’ intention, but he manages to put you on edge. The camera is almost always close to faces, to beads of sweat, to eyes that well up, combined with a cold-toned cinematography that reflects the anguish inhabiting the hospital. Aaron Zigman’s music is enveloping; suddenly you realize you’re biting your lips or about to chew a fingernail.
Si alguna vez sintieron esa especie de rabia, que llega cuando un sistema o alguna institución te da la espalda, seguro se identificarán con la cinta, que es una interpelacion hacia esos sistemas sanitarios que privilegian el dinero y no las vidas humanas. Creo que en resumen esta historia es de hasta dónde somos capaces de llegar por los que amamos, y hasta aquí llego, pues a los que no la han visto no les voy a contar el final, solo les apuntaría que esta es como una obra maestra de sentimiento,
y a los que si espero su recuerdo les perdure.

It’s a challenge to those healthcare systems that prioritize money over human lives. It reflects the helplessness of a father when he becomes convinced that his son might die not because there’s no cure, but because he doesn’t have enough money. It also shows us how beautiful solidarity and mutual respect among people can be—because surely many of you, not to be absolute, have felt at some point that justice isn’t equal for everyone.
I think, in summary, this story is about how far we are willing to go for the ones we love. And that’s as far as I’ll go, because I’m not going to spoil the ending for those who haven’t seen it. I’ll just say it’s like a masterpiece of feeling. And for those who have seen it, I hope the memory of it endures.
