SINNERS

“You boys twins?”
“No, we cousins”
That’s most definitely what made me see this film. I think we don’t talk about the impact of social media enough. So much so that even if you’re not one to give in to hype, you just get pushed because of all the commentaries you would see out there. There’s no reason I should have seen this film any earlier than this time again next year, but with the number of times I heard that beginning statement made, which sounded pleasant enough to my ear, I just knew I had to see it.

Sinners (2025)

Set in 1932, Smoke and Stark, identical twins who were veterans of World War I have returned after all the horrors they had faced to their hometown to put the past behind them and start up a juke joint. Their cousin, Sammie, who is an aspiring guitarist joins them against the wishes of his pastor father who warns him on the dangers of blues music as it is supernatural and capable of calling out evil. He pays a deaf ear and follows his cousins anyway.

The twins recruit a pianist, Pearline, a singer who Sammie is enamored of, Annie(Smoke’s estranged wife) as a cook, Cornbread as a bouncer, and a Chinese couple, Grace and Bo, as suppliers. On the opening night, Sammie begins to play, all begin to dance, and it all goes downhill from there.

I’ve always been a fan of Ryan Coogler’s work, so when I found out he was the director, I knew it was going to be a hit. And that it was, because he delivered this in a way that carried all the intensity that it should have in a way that was raw and gripping. It’s a story of guilt, faith, forgiveness, and, of course, music. It was such an experience for me, and even with the genre as horror, I still kept at it.

The characters delivered. Both the veteran actors and the new ones. I’m not one of those with the Michael B. Jordan craze, but boy, do I see it. That man acts like that’s what he was born to do so. Pulling off two characters is no easy feat, and his acting gave the twins distinct personalities that I almost believed they were different people. Every character interpreted their roles so that you couldn’t help but be immersed in it.

As always, even with a brilliant story, there are downsides. Hate to give spoilers to those who haven’t seen it yet, but I nearly couldn’t with the pacing. One hour goes by and there are still building up to it. Your patience is rewarded in the end, but of course, it is not everyone who would be willing to wait that long. That one hour with not much happening would almost seem like an eternity.

I also wish there was some backstory to their times in Chicago since it shoulders most of the present events. A little flashback into the said horrors that were faced, but with a budget of $90 million, I guess we still can’t have everything, can we? It’s a brilliant piece, but I still have mixed feelings. What do you think?

I just downloaded this movie because it kept showing up on my app as one of the most watched.
This was a really nice review, even though I usually dislike slow-paced movies, I’ll still go ahead and watch it.
