Me Before You

So, my thought process was, movies with a bitter sweet ending and then I remembered this film that Iā€™m about to share it today, and I thought, why not? A movie like this usually comes at certain points. So, itā€™s something Iā€™d recommend any day.

Me Before You (2016)

Louisa Clark(Emilia Clarke)has been jumping in between jobs. After being laid off from the cafĆ© sheā€™d been working for the last six years, she must find a means to earn an income for her family that desperately need money. On the side, Louisa has an obnoxious boyfriend who is an entrepreneur. Out of options, she seeks what is available from the job center, and that is how she finds herself working as a caregiver for Will Traynor(Sam Claflin), a somewhat jaded former banker who was completely paralyzed due to a motorcycle accident. Sheā€™s offered a six-month fixed term contract and because none of the other caretakers stayed, the Traynor family is desperate.

Louisa, with her quirky self tries to interact with Will and make him a little more happy and maybe less cynical, which is not easy at first, but soon enough, they become friends, being enamoured by each otherā€™s personalities, and thereafter, other feelings come into play. Feelings that promise happiness. Or pain.

When this movie came out, I wasnā€™t sure I was going to watch it. I think I felt the sadness looming just ahead and I did not want to experience what I went through with The Fault In Our Stars. However, this movie is coined from a book by Jojo Moyes with the same name, and one thing I know about movies adapted from books is that the plot line must be stellar, so against all second thoughts, I dove right into it and hoped for the best, or that at least the tears would be minimal.

I loved Louisaā€™s personality to a great extent. I loved her quirky, light-hearted nature and with a man as cynical as Will, as portrayed in the film, she shouldnā€™t have lasted a day in his employ. But then again, thatā€™s what we need sometimes, isnā€™t it? A bit of light to squelch the darkness. Iā€™ve read a lot of books though that made me roll my eyes at Willā€™s personality. Cold, unfeeling man that is jaded because of what he perceives is lifeā€™s unjust treatment towards him. But I still enjoyed his deadass quips and how his character developed and blossomed throughout the movie.

Concerning the themes, I reckon that there are quite deep and profound. The importance of friendship that shines throughout the movie. The necessity of being oneā€™s true self no matter how weird or unconventional the world perceives. The value of protecting your peace and doing whatever makes you happy without a care for the world. All truly beautiful things. Did I cry while watching this? Iā€™m not quite sure I remember. But like I said, it was a bitter-sweet ending. One that leaves you feeling somewhat satisfied even though the ending does not promise everything you would have otherwise wanted.

It's indeed an ideal watch for anyone that finds pleasure in the romance genre that isnā€™t too cheesy and is quite palatable on the palate. Hope you enjoy!

I loved the book, the movie not as much.

Yeah, pretty understandable cause the books are mostly always better than the movies.

Wonderful review. I really Liked the chemistry Between this two. I really cried at the last scene. Was it really necessary? He could live with her. It was so heartbreaking. Thanks for sharing the review šŸ’•šŸ’
