Kingsman: The Secret Service

I don’t know how everyone feels about franchises, especially those of the action genre. It’s not something I’m particularly optimistic about, because it usually gets bad after the second movie in the franchise at most. So, if anything, I’m keener on the first movie in the franchise which is almost always the biggest hit. We talked about the third movie in the Fallen franchise: Angel Has Fallen, and today, we’ll be talking about the first movie in the Kingsman franchise.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

This action-comedy movie tells the story of Gary “Eggsy” Unwin who dropped out of training from the Royal Marines despite his athletic prowess and subsequently gets arrested for stealing the car of his abusive stepfather’s friend, Dean. Soon enough, he gets rescued by Harry who informs him that he is part of an elite British secret service called Kingsman. After rigorous training and tests, Gary becomes a member.

Afterwards and for their most threatening case, a detonation signal is traced to a billionaire philanthropist, Valentine Richmond who offers free SIM cards and internet service to everyone worldwide. But it is discovered soon enough that this philanthropic deed of his is backed by a sinister motive to control climate by completely annihilating mankind using a violence-transmitting signal. Now, it’s up to the KIngsmen to stop this devious plan before it comes to fruition.

Most of the movies I’ve watched are with my family, and the Kingsman franchise is one we have seen more than thrice together. It’s like the family can’t get over it even though we can now predict scenes even before it happens. The intensely violent actions, coupled with dark comedy and wit are a huge sell mark for us, and the ladies in the family happen to find the whole British accent appealing, lol.

There were so many good points in this movie that it’ll be hard to name them all. I found the storyline unique and fresh. Yeah, it’s still the same old action with a megalomaniac thinking he can control the world, or at least he’s entitled to doing so and then someone or a group of people going out of their way to stop him. So yeah, Kingsman: The Secret Service had all of that, but its way of going about that plot is what got to me. From the training process to all the insanely wicked deeds that were perpetrated by the villain, all had an appeal to it that is hardly seen in regular action movies.

Speaking of villains, Samuel L. Jackson’s acting as the villain was new for me, as I rarely see him act roles where he is the villain, and the fact that he didn’t look or act like the regular villain by way of dressing and mannerisms was refreshing. The rest of the actors like Taron Egerton and Colin Firth interpreted their roles with dexterity. I especially loved Taron’s charm exuded in his role. He is a brilliant actor and I’d love to see more films of his, though he excelled as well in the rest of the films in this franchise.

I heard that this film won the Empire Award for Best British Film in 2015, a year after it was released, and I think it is totally deserved. The acting, directing, and even soundtrack were more than stellar, in my opinion, and I’m glad a lot of other people thought so. I hope you enjoy it!

I have never heard of this movie before but I've seen the mc in a lot of movies. Seems like a great watch as you've watched it three times and haven't gotten tired of it!;)
