Why do I feel like movie producers can't handle a sequel and one thing that pisses me off is when producers change the whole genre in the next movie. Why can't you give me something like the first movie I fell in love with. M3GAN 2.0 really failed in that aspect, because tell me why the producers and writers just agreed to turn the scary, creepy, AI doll, that I fell in love with to a sassy, snarky vigilante hero.
M3GAN is back and I'm excited. M3GAN 2.0 is a sequel to M3GAN release in 2022, a horror movie about a creepy AI doll that goes haywire and starts her killing spree. The first movie introduces Gemma (Allison Williams), a technical genius, that works at a toy company and Cady (Violet McGraw), Gemma's niece, who just lost both her parents and is forced to stay with Gemma. The abrupt change make everything awkward; Cady dealing with the loss of her parents and Gemma not knowing how to help Cady with the anger and grief that Cady has deal with because of the loss.
Gemma turns to the only thing she knows, Tech, and makes an AI doll so real that Cady starts to get overly reliant on it, as it serves as a means of escape from the grief. Things were all candies and butterflies, until M3GAN starts defying orders, starts creating her own rules and, doing everything, I mean EVERYTHING!!!, to achieve her one goal and that is to keep Cady happy at all times and make sure she never comes to harm. Gemma finds out and tries to put an end to it but M3GAN goes berserk because she feels her "efforts" to keep Cady safe was underappreciated.
Fast forward to M3GAN 2.0, we are introduced to AMELIA, a weaponized, AI, Military fighting machine. AMELIA finally goes rogue, because why not, the government turns to the M3GAN the AI doll so clever to deceive her creator. Meanwhile Gemma is running campaigns against AI after the whole M3GAN fiasco but is now forced to work with M3GAN to stop the big bad AI fighting machine (AMELIA), as she wants to Unleashed chaos on the world.
What I absolutely love about this movie is M3GAN, whether she is a creepy doll with misread intentions or she's a snarky vigilante hero, she slays both and I couldn't get over the fact that she's back on my screen with a fresh look. Jenna Davis (voice) and Amie Donald (physical performance) are once again in sync, making her movements and voice both scary and hilarious with a hint of sarcasm. You just know that the producers really put more money in this movie than the first; from the high speed chase, High tech look and action scenes, it all screams high budget.
But I felt like the original plot and story somewhat got lost and diluted. I really love my horrors and I was a bit let down when I saw the movie take a more comedy-action genre instead. The movie just had way to much going on that you kind of get lost in the whole plot and although watching this movie was a blast but I still miss the first M3GAN that gave full creepy vibes all the way.
Although this movie has layers and layers of snarky replies and actions packed scenes, it is safe to say that under all the sacarsm is valuable themes and lessons to be learnt. It shows how technology never really dies but just updates and how over dependce AI and technology can turn disastrous and can affect the society at large.
Finally this movie is a must watch and if you must watch make sure to watch the first movie first. If you love the likes of Terminator or Spy Kids this might be your sign to watch this. If u get scared easily just don't sleep with the lights off though, who knows if your smart TV or siri may talk back.
*It's still Abeegail *
