World Economic Forum: Subsidiary of a European Climate NGO wants to launch a new European Social Media W to rival X.

Auf dem World Econmic Forum wurde ein neues europäisches Social Media mit dem Namen W in Form eines Star-Wars-Intros angekündigt.

Die Plattform W soll Tochtergesellschaft der europäischen Klima-NGO "We Don’t Have Time" sein und von der Schweizer Datenschutz-Expertin Anna Zeiter geleitet und von zahlreichen Ex-Politikern im Advisory-Board unterstützt werden.

Das neue europäische Social Media soll dezentral und möglichst transparent sein (Open-Source), jedoch eine User-Identifikation (KYC) verlangen, um Bots und Fake News zu bekämpfen.

Bis auf den KYC-Part klingt das Projekt spannend, denke aber, dass es W wegen den Netzwerkeffekten und der großen Konkurrenz im Kurznachrichten-Bereich (X, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Hive und Nostr) sehr schwer haben wird.

"Wenn das politische Brüssel auf W postet statt auf X, haben wir schon viel gewonnen", sagt die CEO von W.

Bin da etwas skeptisch, was meint ihr? Dezentrale Alternativen würde es ja bereits genug geben.

At the World Economic Forum, a new European social media platform called W was announced in the form of a Star Wars intro.

The W platform is to be a subsidiary of the European climate NGO “We Don't Have Time” and will be headed by Swiss data protection expert Anna Zeiter and supported by numerous former politicians on the advisory board.

The new European social media platform is intended to be decentralized and as transparent as possible (open source), but will require user identification (KYC) to combat bots and fake news.

Except for the KYC part, the project sounds interesting, but I think W will have a very difficult time due to network effects and fierce competition in the short message sector (X, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Hive, and Nostr).

“If political Brussels posts on W instead of X, we've already won a lot,” says the CEO of W.

I'm a bit skeptical about that, what do you think? There are already enough good decentralized alternatives out there in my opinion.
