What is BritCard in the UK?

BritCard ist eine Digital ID-Initiative in UK ähnlich wie sie auch von der EU angedacht ist.

Mit der Digital ID, die Teil der GOV.UK Wallet App ist, können sich Bürger digital ausweisen. Ein ähnliches System gibt es auch in Österreich mit der ID Austria.

Die Bedenken der Together Initiative sind, dass diese IDs verpflichtend werden könnten, und man sie zum Beispiel online in der Zukunft bei Social Media-Accounts einsetzen wird müssen, um sein Alter und seine Identität zu überprüfen und zu hinterlegen (KYC).

Ähnliche Befürchtungen gibt es auch in der EU (EUDI Wallet App).

Ein weiteres Problem ist, dass diese Apps nicht open-source sind, und man gezwungen werden könnte, diese Apps am Smartphone zu installieren und diese auch Sicherheitslücken oder Überwachungssoftware über die reine ID-Funktionalität hinaus beinhalten könnten. Nicht jetzt, aber in Zukunft würde diese Möglichkeit der totalen Überwachung zumindest technisch entstehen.

Daher wäre es wichtig ein besonders Auge auf die ID Apps zu werfen, damit diese nicht zu einer Überwachungsinfrastruktur werden, sondern bürgerrechts-konform implementiert werden.

Zunächst sollte die BritCard für Zuwanderer verpflichtend eingeführt werden, um eine Arbeitserlaubnis digital nachweisen zu können. Diese Pläne der Verpflichtung sind aufgrund des starken Widerstand aber im Januar 2026 wieder auf Eis gelegt worden.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Wird jeder Bürger in UK (und in der EU) bald eine digitale ID App für Social Media & Co. benötigen?

BritCard is a digital ID initiative in the UK similar to that being considered by the EU.

With the digital ID, which is to be part of the GOV.UK Wallet app, citizens will be able to identify themselves digitally. A similar system also exists in Austria with ID Austria.

The Together Initiative's concern is that these IDs could become mandatory and that, for example, they will have to be used online in the future for social media accounts to proof and store one's age and identity (KYC).

Similar concerns also exist in the EU (EUDI Wallet app).

Another problem is that these apps are not open-source, and people could be forced to install them on their smartphones, which could also pose a a security vulnerabilities or surveillance risk beyond the pure ID functionality. Not now, but in the future, this possibility of total surveillance would at least arise technically.

It would therefore be important to keep a close eye on ID apps to ensure that they do not become a surveillance infrastructure, but are implemented in a manner that complies with UK's civil and free speech rights.

Initially, the BritCard was to be made mandatory for immigrants in order to provide digital proof of a work permit. However, these plans were put on hold in January 2026 due to strong opposition.
