What is Android SafetyCore? Google installed a background app without permission that can scan your smartphone for nudity. How to uninstall it.
Google hat Anfang 2025 auf allen Android-Smartphones ungefragt eine neue Hintergrund-App (SafetyCore) installiert, die Bilder auf eurem Smartphone nach pornographischen Inhalten scannen kann.
Die App mit dem Namen "Android System SafetyCore" ist offiziell als Jugend-Schutzmaßnahme für Google Message gedacht und wird für Personen unter 18 Jahren automatisch aktiviert.
Google verspricht, dass die Inhalte nur lokal gescannt und nicht an Google oder in die Cloud gesendet werden.
Trotzdem finde ich die ungefragte Vorgehensweise nicht ok, die App sollte meiner Meinung nach optional sein und nicht automatisch auf jedem Smartphone auch von Erwachsenen installiert werden.
Im Moment ist es (noch) möglich die App zu deinstallieren, könnte aber mit einem zukünftigen Update wieder installiert (und aktiviert) werden.
So deinstalliert ihr die SafetyCore App: (März 2025)
- Einstellungen > Apps öffnen
- Filter-Symbol antippen und "Systemprozesse anzeigen" aktivieren
- Nach "SafetyCore" suchen und "Android System SafetyCore" öffnen
- Auf "Deinstallieren" tippen (falls vorhanden), ansonsten "App-Details im Store" antippen und über den Google Store deinstallieren.
Voilà!
Was sagt ihr dazu? Ist euch die SafetyCore App auf eurem Smartphone auch schon aufgefallen? Würdet ihr sie deinstallieren oder am Smartphone lassen? Wieso macht das Google ungefragt? Die Befürchtung ist, dass so eine Hintergrund-App in Zukunft für staatliche Chat-Kontrollen etc. missbraucht werden könnte.

At the beginning of 2025, Google installed a new background app (SafetyCore) on all Android smartphones that can scan images on your smartphone for pornographic content.
The app with the name “Android System SafetyCore” is officially intended as a kids protection measure in Google Message and is automatically activated for people under the age of 18.
Google promises that the content is only scanned locally and not sent to Google or the cloud.
Nevertheless, I don't think the unsolicited approach is ok, in my opinion, the app should be optional and not automatically installed on every smartphone, even for adults.
At the moment it is (still) possible to uninstall the app, but it could be reinstalled (and activated) with a future update.
How to uninstall the SafetyCore app: (March 2025)
- open Settings > Apps
- tap the filter icon and activate “Show system apps”
- search for “SafetyCore” and open “Android System SafetyCore”
- tap on “Uninstall” (if available), otherwise tap on “App details in store” and uninstall via the Google Play Store.
Voilà!
What do you think? Have you noticed the SafetyCore app on your smartphone? Would you uninstall it or leave it on your smartphone? Why is Google doing this without asking? The fear is that such a background app could be misused in the future for EU chat controls etc.

Automatically doing that for everyone is a huge privacy concern. I think a way better approach would have been to make it optional and notify parents of this new app.

Würde man etwas wie "staatliche Chat Kontrolle" nicht eher dann in den Kern von Android einbauen?
Technisch wäre das mit so einer Android Background App mit speziellen Berechtigungen durchaus möglich. Chat-Programme, so ist die Befürchtung, könnten dann dazu gezwungen werden, so einen Service zu nutzen, um Chats nach illegalen Inhalten automatisiert zu durchsuchen.
Ich meinte eher, damit es nicht so auffällt und nicht Löscherbar ist
Looks kinda like a privacy overreach. Even if it's for a good cause, installing it without permission isn’t cool. Hope this doesn’t become permanent though
That just sounds like an invasion of our privacy. Google does a lot of stuff invading our privacy without asking, after all they know better than their customers... It could easily be abused by the government and it's a dangerous start to a journey in the wrong direction. Thanks for pointing it out!

Obwohl es bei der App sicher um einen weiteren Schritt zur Totalüberwachung geht. Jugendliche zu schützen wird hier wieder einmal ein Vorwand sein.
