UK bans social media and YouTube for under 16 y/o. Bluesky and Hive probably not included in the ban. VPNs becoming useless?

UK führt eine verpflichtende Alterskontrolle für Social Media ein und verbietet den Zugang für unter 16 Jährige.

Kritiker sehen darin, nicht nur eine Jugendschutzmaßnahme, sondern vor allem das Ende der Anonymität im Internet kommen. KYC durch die Hintertür. Vor allem, wenn man seine Meinung im Internet postet, wird man das nicht mehr so einfach anonym machen können. Eine Gefahr für die Meinungsfreiheit.

Betroffen sind Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook und X, aber auch YouTube soll für unter 16 Jährige verboten werden. Das ist heftig.

Die genaue Liste liegt noch nicht vor, aber höchst wahrscheinlich wird es eine Ausnahme für kleinere Webseiten geben. Nicht jeder Blog und jede Nachrichtenseite wird die Alterskontrolle implementieren müssen.

Nach aktuellem Stand dürfte Bluesky, Mastodon und Hive von dem Ban in UK nicht betroffen sein. Die Plattformen sind noch nicht groß genug.

Fraglich ist auch, ob man die Bans in Zukunft mit VPNs umgehen kann. Die Alterskontrolle soll auf Betriebssystem-Ebene implementiert werden, ein VPN wäre dann vielleicht nutzlos. In Zukunft wird man das Smartphone jailbreaken müssen und VPNs nutzen, um diese ganzen Sperren umgehen zu können.

Leider plant auch die EU und einige Staaten in den USA Ähnliches.

The UK is introducing mandatory age verification for social media in order to ban access for under 16 y/o.

Critics see this not only as a measure to protect minors, but above all as the end of anonymity on the internet. KYC through the back door. Especially when posting one's opinion online, it will no longer be so easy to do so anonymously. A threat to freedom of speech in my opinion.

Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and X are affected, but YouTube is also set to be banned for users under 16. That’s a big deal.

The exact list isn’t available yet, but there will most likely be an exception for smaller websites. Not every blog and news site will have to implement age verification.

As things stand, Bluesky, Mastodon and Hive are unlikely to be affected by the ban in the UK. The platforms aren’t big enough yet.

It’s also unclear whether VPNs will be able to bypass these bans in the future. Age verification is supposed to be implemented at the operating system level, so a VPN might be useless. In the future, you’ll have to jailbreak your smartphone and use VPNs to get around all these restrictions.

Unfortunately, the EU and some states in the US are planning similar measures.
