Today election day in Bulgaria. Former president Rumen Radev (PB) leading in the polls. No money for Ukraine war from Bulgaria, but won't block EU aids. Similar to new Hungarian (Magyar) position.

Bulgarien befindet sich politisch und wirtschaftlich seit Jahren in einer Dauerkrise, alle paar Monate wird ein neues Parlament gewählt, in den letzten 5 Jahren gab es 8 Parlamentswahlen. Die Wahlbeteiligung lag zuletzt unter 40%.

Diesmal is es aber anders, der bei der Bevölkerung beliebte Präsident Rumen Radev, der sich gegen die Euro-Einführung positioniert hat und dessen zweite Amtszeit bald geendet hätte, ist im Januar überraschend zurückgetreten, um jetzt im April bei den Parlamentswahlen mit einer eigenen Liste anzutreten.

Seine Chancen stehen dabei sehr gut, in den Umfragen erreicht er den ersten Platz mit 30%, manche Umfragen sehen ihn sogar noch deutlicher vorne.

Radev punktet auch im Kampf gegen die vorherrschende Korruption bei den Wählern und vertritt auch in Sachen Ukraine-Krieg einen neuen Standpunkt, der sich sehr nahe an der neuen ungarischen Magyar-Position orientiert.

Radev lehnt weitere Zahlungen an die Ukraine ab, möchte eine Ausnahmeregelung für Bulgarien ähnlich wie Ungarn erhalten, würde aber EU-Hilfspakete nicht blockieren, solange sich Bulgarien nicht daran beteiligen müsse.

Bin gespannt, wie die Wahl heute ausgeht, und ob Radev tatsächlich Premier und mit wem er koalieren wird. Die Regierungsbildung wird voraussichtlich nicht einfach werden, da die Standpunkte der Parteien so unterschiedlich und die Parteien so verfeindet sind.

Bulgaria has been in a state of political and economic crisis for years; a new parliament is elected every few months, and there have been eight parliamentary elections in the last five years. Voter turnout in the most recent election was below 40%.

This time, however, things are different. President Rumen Radev, who is popular with the public, has opposed the adoption of the euro, and whose second term would soon have ended, surprisingly resigned in January to run in the parliamentary elections this April with his own party list.

His chances are very good; he leads the polls with 30%, and some polls show him with an even wider lead.

Radev is also scoring points with voters in the fight against rampant corruption and is taking a new stance on the war in Ukraine that closely aligns with Hungary’s Magyar position.

Radev opposes further payments to Ukraine, wants to secure an exemption for Bulgaria similar to Hungary’s, but would not block EU aid packages as long as Bulgaria is not required to participate.

I’m curious to see how the election turns out today, and whether Radev will actually become prime minister and with whom he will form a coalition. Forming a government is unlikely to be easy, as the parties’ positions are so divergent and the parties are so at odds with one another.
