Was sagt ihr dazu?

I'm working on a location picker for the Crypto Space app, which lets you tag your posts with a worldmappin geotag.
In the process, I noticed that the Google Maps API can incur significant monthly fees and isn't free.
Embedding a static map is free, but if you want to display a dynamic map for selecting a location, Google charges a fee starting at 10K hits per month.
At one million hits, the fee is already $5,000 per month.
My AI agent tried to get around this fee by implementing a dynamic map on its own that would have used only the free static embed from Google Maps. Crazy.
I then decided to use a combination of OpenFreeMap, MapLibre GL JS, OpenStreetMap, and Photon. This is also free for low traffic volumes.
Photon also allows you to search for an address globally, though the number of requests is limited, and you’re not allowed to implement autocomplete, as that would generate more traffic.
Learned something new again. I was blown away that Google charges a fee for searching for and selecting a location and that the AI tried to get around this with a hack.
What do you think? Did you know that the Google Maps API isn’t free? Do you think this is a good strategic decision on Google’s part? That said, the static embeds are free.
Google’s model feels more like a pay wall than a service
