Meta hasn’t completely abandoned VR development and has now unveiled a new ultra-lightweight headset that’s said to weigh just 100 grams.
The processing unit and battery have been moved to an external device, which is a very sensible compromise that keeps the actual headset from being so heavy.
The other specs, such as 5K resolution and pancake lenses, are also impressive, but unfortunately there’s a major drawback.
Due to its design, the field of view is relatively small at 66–77 degrees, and the headset doesn’t have controllers, much like the Apple Vision Pro.
This means the headset isn’t ideal for VR and gaming experiences, but is better suited for content consumption and mixed reality.
I’m not sure if a hybrid device like this will really catch on, since gaming is actually the killer feature of VR.
Even with such lightweight glasses, I can’t imagine working for hours on end using them as a 2D monitor replacement, the way Apple has advertised the Vision Pro.
Still, it’s a cool step forward, maybe it’ll take another two or three generations before true VR headsets with a wide field of view become extremely lightweight and compact. Bigscreen Beyond is also working toward this goal.
What do you think of the new Meta VR glasses and the fact that Meta hasn’t quite given up on VR after all? Would you buy these glasses?
Not really. I have tried VR, but it's not my cup of tea.
VR makes me nauseous and Meta does too. SO this would be double puke!
