So reagiert Österreich auf die stark gestiegenen Benzin-Preise:

Die Tankstellen dürfen den Preis nur noch 3 mal pro Woche erhöhen, davor war das täglich einmal zu Mittag gestattet. Kein Aprilscherz. Bin skeptisch, ob das etwas bringt oder die Preiserhöhung nur kurzfristig um 1 Tag verzögert.

Ab heute tritt in Österreich auch die umstrittene Spritpreisbremse in Kraft. Die Mineralölsteuer wird um 5 Cent reduziert, davor war sie etwa 40 bzw. 50 Cent für Diesel bzw. Benzin.

Weitere 5 Cent sollen eingespart werden, in dem die Margen der Raffinerien und der Lieferkette reguliert werden. D.h. die Gewinnspanne muss um 5 Cent pro Liter sinken, obwohl diese Maßnahme fraglich ist, wie man das im internationalen Wettbewerb umsetzen kann. Letztendlich könnte dann Österreich weniger mit Treibstoffen beliefert werden, sollte die Preise zu stark künstlich gedeckelt werden.

Man kann durch Kriege im Nahen Osten und in Russland (Baltische Ölexport-Kapazitäten stark getroffen) verursachte Supply-Krise nicht künstlich mit Preis-Regulierungen wegregulieren. Das geht leider nicht.

Here’s how Austria is responding to the sharp rise in gas prices:

Gas stations are now only allowed to raise prices three times a week, previously, they were permitted to do so once a day at noon. This isn’t an April Fool’s joke. I’m skeptical whether this will actually make any difference or if it will just delay the price hike by a single day.

Starting today, the controversial fuel price cap also goes into effect in Austria. The mineral oil tax is being reduced by 5 cents, previously, it was around 40 or 50 cents for diesel and gasoline, respectively.

An additional 5 cents is expected to be saved by regulating the margins of refineries and the supply chain. This means the profit margin must decrease by 5 cents per liter, although it is questionable how this measure can be implemented in the face of international competition. Ultimately, Austria could end up receiving fewer fuel supplies if prices are artificially capped too strictly.

You cannot artificially regulate away a supply crisis caused by wars in the Middle East and Russia (Baltic oil export capacities severly impacted) through price regulations. Unfortunately, that’s not possible.
