EU MiCA regulation fallout: Binance app disappeared from the Google Play Store. Transactions blocked by banks.

Mittlerweile zeichnen sich die ersten Folgen des FinTech-Kahlschlags in der EU ab. Die beliebte Binance App lässt sich auf meinem Android nicht mehr über den Play Store updaten und die App ist auch aus dem Play Store verschwunden. Alternativ ist es aber möglich, eine apk direkt von Binance herunterzuladen. Die einfache Discovery und Installation der App über den Play Store ist aber nicht mehr möglich.

Und auf Social Media mehren sich Beschwerden, dass Banküberweisung an nicht MiCA-regulierte Exchanges von Banken proaktiv blockiert werden.

Nur noch ein Dutzend Krypto-Exchanges haben in der EU eine MiCA-Lizenz bekommen, 80-90% der kleineren FinTech-Firmen wurden von der EU gebannt, was das FinTech-Angebot in der EU verglichen mit anderen Regionen der Welt wie den USA oder UK dramatisch dezimiert hat.

Welche Auswirkungen das auf die Konsumenten, den Wettbewerb und das Risikokapital in der EU haben könnte, habe ich in den letzten Posts ausführlich besprochen. Die EU könnte mit zunehmend restriktiver Regulierung sowohl bei IT, KI und FinTech-Startups weiter zurückfallen und nicht mehr als attraktiver Markt für Firmengründungen gesehen werden.

Meanwhile, the first consequences of the FinTech regulation crackdown in the EU are becoming apparent. The popular Binance app can no longer be updated on my Android device via the Play Store, and the app has also disappeared from the Play Store. However, it is possible to download an APK directly from Binance as an alternative. But it is no longer possible to easily discover and install the app via the Play Store.

And on social media, complaints are mounting that banks are proactively blocking bank transfers to exchanges not regulated by MiCA in the EU.

Only a dozen crypto exchanges have received a MiCA license in the EU; 80–90% of smaller fintech firms have been banned by the EU, which has dramatically decimated the fintech landscape in the EU compared to other regions of the world, such as the U.S. or the U.K.

In my recent posts, I’ve discussed in detail the potential impact this could have on consumers, competition, and venture capital in the EU. With increasingly restrictive regulation in IT, AI, and fintech startups, the EU could fall further behind and no longer be seen as an attractive market for startups.
