BIP 110 forked the Bitcoin blockchain, but with only 2.53% of the mining power it basically failed, and is now already more than 200 blocks behind the main chain.

The situation surrounding the BIP 110 issue escalated over the weekend when, surprisingly, the Bitcoin blockchain was forked with the new (old) data limits specified in BIP 110, without waiting for the voting outcome, which would have rejected BIP 110 right away.

However, the new chain has only 2.53% of the Bitcoin blockchain’s hash power, which is still significant but not enough to be recognized as the main chain, and has mined just 2 blocks so far, putting it over 200 blocks behind the main chain. The next difficulty adjustment for the new chain wouldn’t occur for another 4 years. In essence, the fork has failed.

It’s possible that the BIP 110 community could adapt the code and, in the medium term, aim for a fork similar to Bitcoin Cash or SV, but with the opposite goal: to keep blocks and transactions as small as possible and prevent use cases outside the payment system.

As described in the last post, the data limit would make perfect technical sense, but it’s more of a political decision regarding the direction in which Bitcoin should evolve and whether Bitcoin should also tap into other use cases such as NFTs, DeFi, or smart contracts in the long term.

Especially on Nostr, there’s a lot of frustration over the failure of BIP 110, and the debate is highly emotional. But there’s also a lot of FUD being spread, claims that Bitcoin Core now wants to remove the 21M supply limit, etc. Not going to happen.
