It also surprised me that the images aren't hosted on Hive. I just took it for granted. How can it be censorship-resistant otherwise?

The text of the posts are actually stored on the blockchain and it is possible to store the images decentralized on other servers and link them in the post. It is not mandatory to use the default hive image servers.
