Surely it's just common sense!

(edited)

One of my biggest bugs is when people had just do not use their common sense. Sure I get it, that people are so busy, that some things get missed or forgotten but using your common sense can save you a lot of time and money. Like leaving a glass jar or container on the edge of a table is just asking for trouble. Chances are it will get knocked or bumped and end up smashed on the floor. Which then in turn will need carefully cleaning up and replacing. It would have been so much easy to use a bit of common sense and put it way, where it belongs in the first place.

I used to see it all the time at work especially with the young apprentices. I would go nuts if I thought they were just being lazy. I used to wonder whether some people just did not have any common sense at all, but I am sure we all do. I think it is all about attitude, training and how you were raised.

On one of my jobs, one of the guys reckons we had run out of screws, so I had to send him to help someone else. I was sure I order more than enough. I start trying to think where they might be. Ordering more would take too long. Maybe they have been stolen, unlikely, usually things just get misplaced of felt behind. I go to check on work done for the day before we knock off, surprisingly all looks good, except I stand on a few screws on the floor. With a bit more of a look around that's where all the missing screws are on the floor at different locations, where the guy that reckons we have run out had been working.

Instead of getting mad, I let everyone else go home a few minutes early. Except myself and the screw dropper. We had go and practice some common sense picking up after yourself. Funny how he seemed to find a bit of common sense after that as well!

how you were raised

Ufff this is such a great point. I totally believe that what we learn as children, especially from our family, forms the basis of how we will be when we grow up.

And in your example, it may be that he did it on purpose or out of carelessness, but the good thing is that he learned that that cannot happen again.

The screws thing happens with us all the time as well.

Firstly, as thr guys work, if a screw drops then it does not exist anymore.

Secondly, if we have long shifts or short shifts the guys would always seem to run out of screws an hour or hour and a half before we need to leave, resulting in an hour of non-production.

This is where I would pop out with 100-200 screws I keep hidden in reserves for this kind of occasion! Then I go with them to make sure they use it and not just throw it away.

Meh... can't trust people sometimes.

It all depends on the worker ethics... I could do that with SOME of my colleagues but not all.
