From my perspective, I see conspiracy theories as falsehoods disguised as truth. A few years ago, I tackled a conspiracy theory at my organisation.

It happened that we recruited some employees with a salary structure because the organisation was restructuring. A few months after onboarding that set of employees, rumours started flying about their salaries. The rumour mongers had it that new staff salaries were raised to smite the old staff. They also had it that it is a strategy employed by the management to relieve the old staff and replace them with new staff. Somehow, I got wind of this conspiracy through one of my moles and was on alert.

To make things worse, the old staff started holding secret meetings, conspiring to launch a protest and shut down production. This action will result in a huge loss for the organisation. To carry out their conspiracy plan, they launched an attack on the management during one of the meetings, accusing the management of discrimination and favouring the new staff while abandoning the old staff. At the meeting, they also claimed that the newly recruited staff are not more competent than they are.

On hearing this, I was shocked, but I agreed to launch an investigation into the allegations. A few days later, I sent a comprehensive report to management. Also, I formed a secret investigative panel and dived into the issues headlong. Some information was planted at the canteen and other potential areas to eavesdrop on staff conversations.

Within a few days of launching the panel. Feeders started dropping. We gathered enough information about their meetings, the locations and conveners of these meetings. A comprehensive report was shared with the board of directors. Afterwards, I got feedback to resolve the issue and restore normalcy in the organisation.

Even though our organisation is not unionised, a meeting invitation was extended to all the staff conspiring to carry out the protest, as revealed by the investigation. At the meeting, they were allowed to table their grievances before the panel. And it happened that all their thoughts were false.

First, the salary structure they claimed was reviewed to favour the new staff was false. This is because it was implemented across the board as a restructuring policy for everyone. Therefore, the notion that it was implemented for the new staff only is a mere imagination.

Second, the issue of relieving the old staff and replacing them with recruits was a fallacy and mere imagination of their hearts.

So, their conspiracy to take the management unawares with a protest and bring the factory down was borne out of suspicion and imagination, without a single fact to support their claims when queried by the investigative panel.

And yes, I believe in conspiracy theories because there is no smoke without fire. For example, the issue of Ebola and COVID-19 started as a conspiracy theory. While some refuted the outbreak of the disease, others believed it and took precautionary measures against it. Eventually, the outbreak became massive and led to deaths, which caused a major shift in the whole world. However, sometimes, they end up being false because, in the first place, the information generated was on false pretences. For example, during COVID-19, there was an insinuation that the 5G network is a carrier and can cause COVID-19 syndrome. This claim was scientifically and medically proven to be false. Again, the issue of the world coming to an end around 2012 did not take place.

Additionally, conspiracy theories can help to address pending issues within society and organisations. They reveal hidden agendas through insinuation and heresy. Conspiracy theories can also serve as pointers to some burning issues in the environment. Through the conspiracies, any impending wrong aspirations might be corrected. So I see conspiracy theory as a warning signal regarding something about to happen.

How easily do you find out if something is a conspiracy theory?

A conspiracy theory could be detected through scrutiny. I scrutinise information I generate from moles or informants in my organisation. I also allow some time to elapse to make verifications and confirmations. This will enable me to arrive at a favourable conclusion. However, I apply decorum, tact and proper investigation to reveal facts and confirm that it is a conspiracy theory.

How do you know something is a conspiracy theory?

Once the information cannot be verified after scrutiny, it is most likely a conspiracy theory. For example, some news that bursts out on social media. Several of them are fake, while others are for clout chasing. Sometimes, when you press further to get to the root of the information. The rumour monger will delete it. Also, when you profile the accounts, it will return with fake account feedback.

Back to my story, after painting the true picture of the current state of the organisation to those employees scheming to disturb the factory production through protest. They were sober and apologised. They also vowed to stop the conspiracy. However, they were issued an undertaking, which they signed to solidify their vow and normalcy was restored in the organisation.
