ZBD and Bitcoin Gaming: The Custodial Risk Players Should Understand
Bitcoin gaming sounds like a great idea.
Play a game, complete some tasks, watch an advertisement and earn a few satoshis along the way. There are several games on Google Play that work exactly like this.
Many of them use ZBD (ZEBEDEE) to distribute Bitcoin rewards.
I used ZBD myself for exactly that purpose. Several games sent my earned satoshis to my ZBD account, and for quite some time everything worked as expected.
Unfortunately, my experience eventually changed completely.
My ZBD Account Became Inaccessible
At some point I could no longer access my ZBD account.
The much bigger problem was what happened afterwards: I contacted support several times and did not receive a solution that restored access to my account.
There were still satoshis in the account.
For practical purposes, I now consider those sats lost.
I want to make an important distinction here: I am describing my personal experience. I cannot determine why my account was restricted, nor am I claiming that every ZBD user will experience the same problem.
However, my experience made me look much more closely at how this system works.
And that revealed a fundamental problem.
ZBD Is a Custodial Wallet
This is the most important thing Bitcoin gamers need to understand.
With a self-custodial Bitcoin or Lightning wallet, you control your funds through your own keys.
With a custodial service such as ZBD, the provider controls the infrastructure holding the funds on your behalf.
That means:
Not your keys, not your coins.
It is an old Bitcoin saying, but situations like this demonstrate why it still matters.
If access to your custodial account disappears, you cannot simply restore the wallet somewhere else using your seed phrase.
Your access depends on the provider.
ZBD Can Restrict or Terminate Accounts
This is not merely a theoretical concern.
ZBD's Terms of Service contain provisions allowing the company to suspend or terminate access under various circumstances. Its terms also give ZBD significant discretion concerning account termination.
That becomes particularly important when Bitcoin is still stored inside the account.
There are also public reviews from users reporting account restrictions, login problems or difficulties obtaining support.
Those reports do not prove that every complaint is justified, and online reviews should always be treated carefully.
But combined with the custodial nature of the wallet, they demonstrate a risk that users should understand before accumulating sats there.
Why Should Bitcoin Games Require One Particular Wallet?
This is the part that bothers me most.
The Lightning Network was designed to enable fast and interoperable Bitcoin payments.
Technically, Bitcoin gaming does not have to mean:
Game → ZBD → Player
Lightning can enable something much better:
Game → Lightning → Your Wallet
A game could provide a Lightning withdrawal mechanism and allow players to receive their sats using a compatible wallet of their choice.
That could be Phoenix, Breez, Zeus, another Lightning wallet or even the player's own Lightning node.
In fact, ZBD itself provides developer infrastructure for Lightning payments and withdrawal requests.
So restricting a game to a ZBD account is not an inherent limitation of Bitcoin or Lightning.
It is an implementation and business decision.
Convenience Comes With a Price
I understand why developers use ZBD.
It makes Bitcoin rewards easy to integrate.
A player can connect a ZBD account or Gamertag and the developer has a ready-made infrastructure for distributing small Bitcoin rewards.
That is convenient.
But convenience creates dependency.
If five different Bitcoin games all pay into the same ZBD account, losing access to that one account can effectively cut the player off from rewards earned across all five games.
That is a centralized point of failure inside something that is supposed to be built around Bitcoin.
My Decision: No More ZBD-Only Games
After my experience, I have made a simple decision.
I will no longer spend my time playing Bitcoin games that require ZBD as the only withdrawal option.
This does not mean that ZBD does not work for other people. Many users successfully use the service and receive their rewards.
My decision is about risk.
If I invest my time into earning satoshis, I want to decide where those satoshis are sent.
If a game supports an open Lightning withdrawal to a wallet I control, I am interested.
If it requires me to accumulate my rewards with a particular custodial provider before I can access my Bitcoin, I am much less interested.
Bitcoin Gaming Should Embrace Bitcoin's Strengths
Bitcoin gives us something remarkable: the ability to hold and transfer digital money without requiring permission from a traditional financial intermediary.
Lightning extends that capability to tiny and almost instant payments.
Gaming is actually one of the perfect use cases for this technology.
Imagine earning 50 sats in a game and pressing:
Withdraw
Your Lightning wallet opens.
You approve the transaction.
Seconds later, the sats are yours.
No mandatory gaming wallet.
No platform balance that has to accumulate first.
No dependency on one account provider.
That is the Bitcoin gaming ecosystem I would like to see.
A Simple Rule for Bitcoin Gamers
Before investing significant time into a Bitcoin reward game, check how withdrawals actually work.
If the game only supports ZBD or another custodial platform, understand that you are accepting counterparty risk.
And if you nevertheless use a custodial reward wallet, consider regularly withdrawing your sats rather than allowing a large balance to accumulate.
The amounts earned from individual games may be small.
But after weeks or months of playing several games, those small rewards can add up.
I learned that lesson through experience.
From now on, when I see a Bitcoin game, one of my first questions will be:
Can I withdraw my sats to the Lightning wallet of my choice?
If the answer is no, I will probably look for another game.
Because earning Bitcoin is nice.
Actually controlling your Bitcoin is better.
