Sometimes, it’s hard to say I’m not addicted to my phone, no matter how hard I try to avoid using it excessively. I’m someone who work and do most things online, so it’s almost impossible not to see me with my phone. It is no longer news that most of us are phone addicts, even in the simplest way. It’s never in our thoughts to become one, it just happened and we probably never just bothered ourselves about it, or maybe we did, but felt like it’s fine to have this one addiction. Besides, we benefit more from it, unlike some other addictions.
For this week’s second edition of the Scifi prompts, we are asked to share our experiences with Phone Addiction. Just reading through the prompt alone, I saw how I battled with myself not to become a victim of phone addiction at some point, but as time went on, it started feeling okay because, at least, for most of it, it is a good addiction because it helps me gain value for most of the time I spend on it.

Have I ever tried to work on it? Yes. Several times even. There was a time I tried to avoid taking up my phone first without praying, but as time went on, it got harder because I got more reasons to stay awake for most part of my night. I’m obviously not the first person to be here and I won’t be the last either, but this doesn’t mean there aren’t remedies. There are remedies, but the truth is, it is easier said than done. Sometimes, when you even try to put in the effort to do better, that’s when more reasons come for you to be distracted and less conscious of your decisions to control your addiction with your phone and not be controlled by it.
Just imagine deciding to do some other important things first instead of picking up your phone first thing when you wake up… but then you realize you didn’t do a particular task before going to bed, and you still have a little time before the deadline. But regardless, everything boils down to being disciplined and focused on what we want. It is definitely not easy or not going to be easy, but it is possible, but it will take discipline and being focused to achieve it. Like I said, we have a lot of things we do with our phones these days, especially for those who work remotely, but then, with better planning and discipline, I think we will be able to work something out.
Having an accountability partner can also help too. Most times, it’s always easier when there is someone to remind you of those little things that can easily escape our minds. This partner should be someone we respect and listen to, or else it won’t work. They will just be there to guide you when it becomes too hard for you. And for the fact that you don’t want to always get a reminder from them, it will help you to also do well, so you can make them feel proud of you.
