[Movie] The Priests (2015)

To this day, no Korean film or series has managed to disappoint me — though that's statistically irrelevant, since I haven't watched nearly as many Korean films as I have 'Western' cinema.

I suppose that's because I'm not an expert or strict film critic. The only thing I ask of a screenwriter is that they don't think their viewers are idiots. That's it.

This film managed to make me feel like the story made sense, and although it's classified as supernatural horror, I'll try out a category of my own: soft-horror.

Yes, it's a film about a subject that would normally make me avoid it, even in broad daylight: demonic possession.

Digging up a bit of memory and catharsis, I can confess that a film like The Exorcist didn't scare me nearly as much until I read that it's based on a documented real event. Chilling!

But The Priests managed to create that uncomfortable feeling fear gives you, without tipping over into psychological horror, which I appreciated.

The film has touches of humor, flashes of drama, and a bit of heroism, alongside suspense and light supernatural horror.

! [SPOILER] The story opens with two priests discussing evil and its manifestations, revealing that one of the 12 manifestations tracked by a Rosicrucian order — which had already lost priests confronting these entities — has now been detected in Korea. An exorcism is necessary.

The film builds its own Catholic mythology, with certain passages that don't align with actual Catholic doctrine, which I assume was a creative liberty they took.

! [SPOILER] Father Kim faces a demon that's too powerful, and his latest assistant has quit, leaving him with one last option that looked doomed to fail from the start.

As I said at the beginning, this film doesn't disappoint — unless you're a die-hard fan of The Exorcist, in which case I wouldn't recommend it, since it'll feel to you like a Disney horror movie. But if you're like me, someone who believes that if God exists, then evil exists too, you can watch this one without ending up traumatized or sleeping with the lights on.

I like your honesty—hehe—if it's a mild horror story, I think I'll like it. Cheers.

This seems like it's going to be an interesting watch, I'd add it to my to-watch-list.

Seriously I'm a huge fan of Korean dramas and I can say none has disappointed me so far since I was a teenager watching.
I will check this out if it doesn't scare too much
