[Movie] Bulandi (2000) Review: Packaging Toxic Patriarchy as Culture

The Cable TV Trap and the 20/100 Verdict

There was a time when cable TV in Pakistan and India had extremely limited options, and movies like Bulandi were broadcast on endless repeat. Like many people from my generation, I grew up watching this film multiple times simply because there was nothing else on. Revisiting it today, I give Bulandi a harsh 20/100. The only reason anyone should ever watch this movie today is if they are a media studies student or a researcher analyzing how cinema historically packaged backward traditions, toxic male dominance, and misogyny to sell them to unsuspecting audiences.

Double Standards and Normalized Violence

As expected from movies of that era, domestic mistreatment and disrespect toward women are brushed off as casual background noise for side characters. However, *Bulandi" introduces a hypocritical twist. The lead character, Meena, who is educated and urban, actually stands up for herself and slaps a MAN. The narrative intentionally highlights this to manufacture outrage. The message the movie pushes is painfully clear: if a man inflicts violence or asserts authority, it is natural and acceptable, but if a woman dares to strike a man or challenge his ego, she is branded as evil and shameless.

Toxic Servitude in the Name of Respect

The film hides its toxicity behind the shield of religion, morals, and traditions. Respecting your husband and taking care of a household is a personal choice in any healthy relationship, but Bulandi twists this into absolute servitude toward an entire family. The husband’s elder brother acts like an unquestionable monarch of the village. The household dynamics are infuriating. Meena prepares food with love, only for her husband to leave the table instantly because his big brother called him. In another scene, while she brings him hot tea, he bolts out so recklessly that he knocks the entire tray over, not caring if the scalding liquid burns his own wife. When Meena calls out this absurdity, the elder sister-in-law lectures her, claiming that an Indian woman’s only job is to stay silent and serve men.

The Tragic Gaslighting of the Only Sane Character

Meena is the only rational, intelligent character in the entire story. She calls out the village’s fake righteousness, questions toxic customs, and represents genuine feminism by standing up for basic self-respect. Yet, the narrative relentlessly frame-shifts to make her look like a villain. The peak of this manipulation happens when her own wealthy father visits, ignores her dignity, and bows before the elder brother like he is a living deity. Surrounded by brainwashed people enforcing a sick system, Meena is continuously lectured until her spirit breaks. By the end, the movie successfully breaks her mind, forcing her to apologize and believe that she was the evil one all along for questioning a toxic hierarchy.
