It Depends On Us: The Nigeria We Deserve.

This morning I was lost in thought as I remembered a conversation I was having with my dad some few years back. He was telling me about how things were back then, how cheap clothes, foodstuffs, house rent, Tfare, and all were back then. And even I can remember how things were some 10-15 years back. Even though then we still feel like things are a bit hard, you will agree with me that it's way better compared to today.

And at the moment, the problem we are facing as a country isn't just one. It is a series of problems. Talk of insecurity, talk of high cost of living, and different crises.

We are at a time when we no longer feel safe as citizens of the country. Back then we could even sleep outside maybe due to heat and such; today you're even scared of sleeping inside your own house. Back then you could travel at night because some of us enjoy night travels a lot, but today even traveling in the daytime is as well risky; fear of being kidnapped and killed is everywhere. Today, farmers can no longer go to their farms in peace; there are various news of bandit attacks and the like. At the moment a lot of communities have now been taken over by the bandits... In a country that has a president who's the commander in chief of the armed forces. What a shame. We are a country of particular concern indeed.

Now, talk of the high cost of living. Things aren't getting any better. Minimum wage remains the same, yet everything else keeps increasing. Talk of the prices of house rent, foodstuffs, clothes, electricity, school fees, and the likes. A lot of families today now have a plan of eating; some eat 1-0-1, meaning they only eat at night and in the morning; most people go the 0-0-1 way or the 1-0-0 way, meaning they either eat only at night or just in the morning. Once in a day. And it is just so painful to see hardworking Nigerians suffering this much.

Recently, some parts of Lagos got flooded, and I'm saddened at the heartbreaking and heart-wrenching videos and pictures I see online. A lot of homes were destroyed, vehicles got flooded away, properties were destroyed, and a lot more. And in all of these, those who suffer the most are the citizens of Nigeria, we the ordinary people who are trying so hard to stay alive. The saddest part is that our government and leaders are less concerned.

They don't even care or bother. Just the other day, I was reading a news article where the governor of Oyo State was saying that the president hasn't called him once since the kidnapping incident that took place at Oyo State. Thanks to God, those kids and their teachers have been released. Just imagine... And these people are busy borrowing money from different places, making life hard for us, campaigning all around, and all when we, the citizens they are meant to protect and make life easier for, are here suffering.

Even with all of that, I believe so much in Nigeria, and I know Nigeria can be better again. Just that it's betterment, and the way it will turn out to be depends on us. So, please come next election and vote wisely. Don't, because of a few thousand naira and foodstuffs that won't last you a month, go ahead to vote for another suffering. And if you don't have your PVC yet, please do that. Don't vote for tribe or religion. Vote for betterment. We all want a good and prosperous nation, and the answer to that lies in our hands too.
