I attended ụlọ akwụkwọ ọta akara not nursery school. 🤣 Back then, our writing materials were slate and chalk not exercise books and pencil or pen that we have now. There were no school bags or lunch boxes, just carry your slate on your head with your oversized uniform and you're good to go. 🤣🤣
So what I learnt back then were mainly rhymes in my native language, Igbo. I'd share some with translations.
Kụọro nụ nwa ngwere aka....erente
Kụọro nụ nwa ngwere aka....erente
Nwa ngwere ejeghi ije na ọ gbara ọsọ ....erente
Piii ....erente
Piiii ah ....erente
Ah eh! ....erente
1, 2,
You start again.
We'll just be singing, clapping and dancing round in a circle.
Translation
Clap for the lizard.... erente
Clap for the lizard.... erente
The lizard didn't walk, it ran .... erente
Piii ....erente
Piiii ah ....erente
Ah eh! ....erente
1, 2,
Chai, good old memories.
@alwaysonyi and @ebony-mama will know this one. 🤣
But lemme shock you with Gen Z rhymes 🤣
Jack & Jill went up the hill
to fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown
and Jill came tumbling after.
Jack & Jill went up the hill
to fetch a pail of water.
Jill fell down and broke her crown
and Jack came tumbling after.
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la la

Jack and Jill went up the hill
to fetch a pail of water.
Carefully they brought it down
and gave it to their mother.

Another favorite one.
Two little blackbirds sitting on the wall
One named Peter, and one named Paul.
Fly away Peter, fly away Paul,
Come back Peter, come back Paul.
Oh! come back little black birds and sit on the wall.
Now here's the fun part of the rhyme instead of One named Peter and Paul, we'd say
Nwanne m Peter, nwanne m Paul. 🤣😂
Who remembered this one?
One, two, three, four, five,
Once I caught a fish alive.
Six, seven, eight, nine, ten,
Then I let it go again.
Why did you let it go?
Because it bit my finger so.
Which finger did it bite?
This little finger on the right.
This little finger on the right.
And so on.
This one is known by everyone na.
This is the way we brush our teeth
Brush our teeth, brush our teeth.
This is the way we brush our teeth
On a warm and sunny morning.
This is the way we wash our face
Wash our face, wash our face
This is the way we wash our face
On a warm and sunny morning.
This is the way we comb our hair
Comb our hair, comb our hair
This is the way we comb our hair
On a warm and sunny morning.
This is the way we put on our clothes
Put on our clothes, put on our clothes
This is the way we put on our clothes
On a warm and sunny morning.
I haff try, abi?
Let me call my village people 🤣🤣

There is nothing educative about your old school rhymes abeg, which one is clap for the lizard? 😂😂
You sef check our modern day rhymes and confirm the difference, hehhe.
Sha, rhymes made school fun back then, whether they had educative lyrics or not we never cared, there was just that energy they carry that brings hope and joy.
My favorite rhyme then was
Paw-paw is a kind of fruit,
Pawpaw is a kind of fruit,
Sweet like sugar,
Yellow like fanta,
Everybody likes pawpaw.
Paw..paw.
Pawpaw gives us energy,
E..gy, gy, gy.
E..gy, gy, gy, gy.
E.. gy, ey, gy...
Funny Sha..
Thanks for the tag momma
Did you say that there's nothing educative in my rhyme?
Okay wait, do you think it's easy for a lizard to always be on the run? To even fall down from tress and buildings no be moi moi. 🤣
That's why they needed to be clapped for. Na motivation levels be that. 🤣

Hahahahah hahahahah please don't let me laugh out my intestines, my Ota Akara school was just opposite our compound so with my slate that was three times bigger than me I would just cross to the other side of the road then will be singing same song.
Hahaha, that oversize slate was a thing then. You'll look like you carried the whole world on your head. 🤣🤣
