In life everyone has a moment they can look back to and appreciate themselves and say with pride that their efforts have yielded results, and this is my win. This is very true in academics, where everything can seem discouraging, financially draining, and tasking at some point.

There are times it looks as if giving up is the only option, yet we dust ourselves and keep moving, either by personal motivation or through someone or something that inspires us. At the end we can look back and count our wins when success finally comes.

Personally, my biggest academic wins so far are not just one but many little steps, and I appreciate and thank God for the grace to keep pushing.

Firstly, passing through the struggles of school and graduating is a win worth celebrating. We all know what it means to be a student in a Nigerian institution, the stress of attending lectures, typing and photocopying, verbal abuse by some lecturers, financial challenges, but in all I passed through and it ended in success.

Again, I did not just graduate, but I have been able to apply most of the knowledge I gained in school in real life, and this has helped me stand out in some areas. It has brought recognition, achievement, self-respect, and reputation. Opportunities often come that require someone in my field, and with recommendations I get such opportunities. Each time I am reminded that passing through school and acquiring those qualifications was a big win. Even facilitating staff training for teachers and students makes me feel that my academic knowledge is being utilized well for the betterment of society and myself.

When I decided to further my studies it has also been fulfilling, because I have not had any low grades or repeated courses, and passing through all these is a big win for me.

Furthermore, I used to read people’s articles and publications in journals and books, always wondering if I could also do the same. Today I can look back and smile knowing that I have publications in different journals, I have contributed to books, and I have my own published works. This is a big win for me, and seeing people reference my work gives me joy.

Truly my advice to people is that what is worth doing is worth doing well. If you are learning a skill, take it seriously and strive to master it. If you are in school, do your best to remain focused, because one day you will look back and celebrate your win. Although I am still yet to reach my destination academically and otherwise, I pray for God’s grace, and I consider these little wins worth celebrating.
