One of my favourite days because it means a post on Hive will be written by me, and I get to hear other music that Hivers and Hiveians enjoy. Well for the select band that participate in ttt anyway!

We are going back to my Silver Chronicles post of a few weeks ago My Soundtrack for the 80s my favourite decade

Quite a self-explanatory title and it is my inspiration for the next few posts on ttt!

The year is now 1982 and we are diving into a band that unfortunately ceased to be in that year!...

The Band - The Stranglers

For this week’s ttt, we are jumping into the fluffing time machine and going back to 1982.

The Stranglers were formed in Guildford down the South of England in 1974. They were one of those bands that you did not know where to put them lol.

Though they emerged right at the epicenter of the UK punk explosion, being popular with the likes of the Sex Pistols and The Clash, they didn't truly fit the "punk" mould. They were older and way more accomplished musicians.

Then throw in Dave Greenfield’s swirling, psychedelic, prog-rock-tinged keyboards, the bass style of Jean-Jacques Burnel, the gritty guitar and vocals of Hugh Cornwell, and the steady driving beat of Jet Black, and you had a fluffing band that had an amazing 23 UK Top 40 singles and 19 Top 40 albums during the late '70s and '80s,

They were famous for their notoriously confrontational attitude with the music press and proved that you could keep your rebellious edge while completely rewriting your musical identity.

Here are three incredible tunes they gave us in that unforgettable year of 1982.

Tune 1 - The Stranglers - Golden Brown

Released: 11 January 1982 (UK)

Album: La Folie (Released late 1981, but the single drove 1982)

Problem their most recognisable song and biggest earworm going!

The ultimate masterpiece of the band's career. Built around an instantly recognisable, intricate harpsichord melody played by Dave Greenfield, the song is famously written in an unconventional, shifting time signature (alternating bars of 3/4 and 4/4 time).

EMI executives initially hated the track, claiming it was completely un-danceable and would ruin the band. The Stranglers had to fight tooth and nail to get it released as a single. The band proved the label completely wrong when the track sailed straight to Number 2 on the UK Singles Chart, kept off the top spot only by The Jam's "Town Called Malice". It remains their highest-charting and most enduring hit.

You might be thinking that The Jam's "Town Called Malice" is a bit familiar. Well if you read my music posts then yes it is fluffing familiar as it was the lead song of my ttt from last week! The Jam and the end of an era

Tune 2 - The Stranglers - Strange Little Girl

Released: July 1982

Album: The Collection 1977–1982

This track comes with a brilliant bit of rock 'n' roll irony. To wrap up their contract with EMI, The Stranglers released a compilation album and delivered "Strange Little Girl" as their final required single.

What the record label didn't realise was that the song was actually an old demo the band had submitted to EMI all the way back in 1974. This was before they were famous, and EMI had rejected it back then for lacking commercial potential!

What the fluff do these fluffers really know!

Re-recorded with a beautiful and clean melodic bassline with a hauntingly smooth vocal delivery, it became a massive success and peaked at Number 7 on the UK Singles Chart in the summer of 1982.

Tune 3 - The Stranglers - European Female (In Celebration Of)

Released: 16 December 1982 (UK)

Album: Feline (Released January 1983, but this lead single hit the airwaves in late '82)

Changing genres time! This was the perfect bridge into their next musical era.

European Female dropped right at the tail end of 1982 to tease their upcoming acoustic-and-electronic heavy album, Feline.

Moving entirely away from the snarling punk energy of the late '70s, "European Female" features a lush landscape of acoustic guitars, subtle synthesizers, and JJ Burnel’s signature driving bass, which was mixed much softer and warmer here.

The song was a commercial hit and climbed into the UK Top 10 in early January 1983 and cementing their status as innovators of the new wave era.

So there you have it, 3 songs released in 1982 from The Stranglers this week with my 80s Soundtrack post as the inspiration!
