WAFCON in morocco - African women showing their power

Right now in Morocco, something really exciting is going on in women football, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON. I’ve been following it closely and I must say, these African ladies are not playing at all. From the opening matches till now, the energy and the passion on that pitch is just something else.

It’s so nice to see how far women football has come in Africa. Before, not many people used to take it serious, but now you can see stadiums full of fans cheering and supporting the ladies like they do for the men. That alone shows growth. The organization this year is also top notch. Morocco has been a great host, just like they were in 2022. You can see the support everywhere and I believe it means a lot to the players.

What really makes this year’s WAFCON stand out for me is the level of competition. There’s no small team again. Every team is playing with their heart, and the matches have been full of surprises. Some countries that people didn’t rate at all are the ones shocking everybody now. I don’t even know who’s going to win this thing anymore because it’s getting hotter each round.

Nigeria of course came in as defending champions and everybody expect them to go far again. And truth be told, they’ve been strong. With players like Asisat Oshoala, Toni Payne and others, you know they’re not backing down easy. But even at that, other countries are not afraid of them. Teams like South Africa, Ghana, and even Zambia are giving them real tough time. You can’t blink while watching those matches.

Another team I really like is Morocco. They’re the host and they’re using the home advantage very well. You can see the hunger in the way they play, like they want to prove something to the whole world. I remember in 2022, they made it to the finals for the first time and now they’re looking to do even better. Their fans are amazing too. The whole country is behind them and it’s really beautiful to see.

Also, shout out to the young talents in this tournament. Some of these girls are just 18, 19 and they’re already balling like professionals. It gives hope for the future of women football in Africa. I just pray the various federations support them beyond just this tournament because there’s serious potential here.

One thing that still needs to improve though is the refereeing. Some calls have been very questionable and it can affect the outcome of some important matches. I hope CAF take notes and work on it going forward. Aside from that, everything has been going well so far.

This WAFCON is more than just football, it's like a celebration of women power and African spirit. The unity, the culture, the skills, everything is just reminding us that African women deserve that spotlight too. Whether you’re a football fan or not, this tournament is one you don’t want to miss.

As we move closer to the semi finals and finals, I just want to see good football and fair play. May the best team win, and may this tournament open more doors for our girls to go international and show what Africa is made of.

Big love to all the teams, all the players and to Morocco for hosting us again. Africa to the world 🌍⚽
