I'll be the first to admit that I am kind of shocked by some of the results from the games this past weekend. Actually, the one that got me the most was the game last night. With the Rams hammering of Minnesota last night on Monday night football, all the teams in the NFC North are gone. All of them besides the Detroit Lions of course.
Through the season the Detroit faithful have had to hear the constant cries from Vikings players and fans complaining that they weren't getting the credit they deserve. Sure, they have never won the Super Bowl, I get it. Trust me as a life long Lions fan, I definitely get it. However, the tantrums do very little to bolster your credibility.
Thankfully, for much of the season, their play did exactly that. You don't get to be 14-2 without having a pretty decent team. Either that or your strength of schedule is just crap, but I don't think that was the case this year.
Unfortunately for them, when the rubber meets the road, they fell absolutely short.
The Lions faced off against the Vikings twice in the regular season and they beat them both times. There was some conjecture that they might need to face them again later in the playoffs. I think everyone is happy that isn't going to happen. Except maybe the Vikings fans.
Despite those loses, they had the chance to prove themselves against Los Angeles, but sadly they fell woefully short losing to the Rams 27 to 9. If anything this just goes to show that Stafford might have a little more gas left in the tank!
Don't get me wrong, I think Sam Darnold has potential. We need to remember just how young he is. If given the opportunity he might grow into his role at the Vikings quite well.
Meanwhile, there were some other games this weekend that were a bit more exciting. It wasn't the Houston/Chargers game though, the Texans dominated that game 32 to 12. The Ravens took down The Steelers 28 to 14, and Buffalo rolled over Denver like a lake effect snow storm over Lake Erie 31 to 7.
Washington had a very very very very close game against Tampa Bay that saw them winning by a field goal 23 to 20 that just barely made it through. Actually, it looked like it was going to miss when it hit the right upright and by some miracle fell down past the cross bar and was successful.
With those games in the books, we now move on to the rest of the playoff games. Houston faces Kansas City in the early game on Saturday next weekend and Washington comes into Detroit for the 8:00 PM game. Then on Sunday the Rams face the Eagles before the Ravens take on Buffalo.
What do you think? Is a Stafford/Goff showdown in the cards?
