I know, I know, it's actually the year of the Snake isn't it? For me though, I am always going to have a certain affinity for Dragons. You see, not only was I born in the Year of the Dragon, my niece is attending Tiffin University who by some chance has a mascot of... you guessed it, the Dragons.
They actually shorten it just a bit when they are cheering and they simply say "Go Gons!".
Which reminds me, I should pick up a piece of silver if they are still available for her. She might really appreciate it as a keepsake that actually has some monetary value.
Anyway, there are some big changes in store for the Lady Dragons this season. First of all, they picked up a lot of new players in the off-season. Between transfer portal transfers and new recruits, they have a pretty full team this year. In addition to that, they also had a generous benefactor donate enough money that they are building a new office and clubhouse specifically for the softball team. It isn't anything fancy, but it will offer them some warmth on those chilly March weekends and a place to store their equipment.
Finally, the biggest change this year is the fact that my niece will not be playing with the team. Due to her recent unexpected introduction to the world of motherhood, she is going to be taking a year off from softball to focus on her preciously perfect little one. She is still going to be attending school online, but she won't be traveling or playing with the team.
This means that while they are heading to Tennessee this weekend for their first weekend of softball in 2025, she will be at home living her best life.
I still plan on following the Gons and writing about them here, but it just won't be the same with her not hitting the field. In a couple of months Tiffin is playing a local school near where I live and we still plan on going to watch them in person. I think my niece is going to make the trip up to watch them as well.
Plus that gives @mrsbozz and I a little bit of baby time, so bonus!
The Dragons have four games this coming weekend spread across two days. They play the same two teams each day in a sort of split double header.
On Saturday they have a 2 PM game against Emory & Henry University, then at 4 PM they play Lincoln Memorial University. On Sunday, they do it all over again, but the times shift to 10 AM and 12 PM.
Later in February they head to Indiana for a weekend of games and then at the beginning of March they are off to Florida for a Spring Break tournament down there.
As I look at the roster, I see a lot of new names and faces on the team, so it is going to be interesting to see who shows up. My niece spent some time at a practice with the team the other weekend helping out even though she isn't playing with them this season.
My other niece still has to finish up her basketball season, then she will be shifting over to softball as well. I'm looking forward to sharing it all with you here!
