The (Other) Final Four

My wife and I were having a conversation the other day and she was talking about how crazy it is that the women's NCAA tournament is happening at pretty much the same time as the men's. We were thinking back to previous years and trying to figure out if the tournament always happened at the same time or if we were just experiencing the "Mandela Effect" thinking that it usually took place before or after the men's tournament.

We couldn't honestly remember. Sure, a quick search on Google would probably tell us the answer, but honestly, it isn't that big of a deal to me. Given the recent interest in women's basketball thanks to national stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, I wouldn't be surprised to find out there is some kind of Title IX decision behind the two tournaments happening at the same time.

True story... Here in Michigan girls basketball at the high school level used to be played in the Fall and boys basketball was played in the Winter. Remember that Title IX stuff I was talking about before. After a long legal battle over a Title IX equality complaint, girls basketball was eventually moved to the Winter like boy's basketball.

Apparently there was concern that being in the same season would take away viewership of the girls games because the focus would be on the boys. I don't now how accurate that is, but I can tell you, I have watched more men's college basketball lately than women's.

Sue me.

There are actually several tournaments going on right now. Besides the Men's tournament that just solidified the Final Four, the Women's tournament also just solidified their Final Four. Finally, there is also the NIT tournament which is basically the consolation tournament for the teams that were good, but didn't make it into the men's national tournament.

It probably won't come as much surprise to you to find that the Final Four teams in the women's championship were all either one or two seeds in the conference. In fact, UConn is the only 2 seed to make it into the Final Four having beat USC. I think USC was the favorite to win the whole thing this year until JuJu Watkins injured her ACL and had to undergo season ending surgery last week.

UConn is a good team, but JuJu is a driving force on USC and we will never know how different things might have been.

Along with UConn, we have UCLA, South Carolina, and Texas. It's nice to see a Big Ten team still in the running. If for no other reason I will probably be cheering for them to win it all, but there is something about UConn that screams underdog and if you know me, you know how I love an underdog.

I think there is a lot of speculation UConn could win it all. I guess we will see...
