Saturday Morning Youth Basketball

I've been leading up to it for a while now with the photos in my other posts, but this past weekend @mrsbozz and I got to drive down state a little bit and watch our youngest nephew play basketball with his school recreation team. The games were held in the "field house" their local high school and I have to admit, it is a really beautiful facility.

Working in a public school system, it is pretty easy to find yourself comparing your facilities to other ones when you visit them for whatever reason. There has been talk at the district where I work about adding a field house and if I get any say in it (I don't), I'd like it to be set up the same way as this one.

Honestly, the idea of a field house is kind of weird to me. We already have a nice large gym (as does this school), so I don't see the point of needing an extra space. I guess if you hold a lot of events and you want to keep everyone in the same area it makes sense.

I can't imagine what an addition like this costs. It would likely take some kind of millage or bond to get constructed and given the current state of the economy, I don't expect the community is going to want to pay more taxes.

Despite the facilities, we were actually there to watch basketball. The kids played two games with each quarter being about six minutes long. The games went fairly quickly even with fouls and free throws and all of that. I like that they keep the games moving despite all the commotion around. There was another game happening just to the right of them on another court.

I guess that's one of the other benefits of having a large field house like this.

Unfortunately, they lost both the games they played, but my nephew did really well. The opening photo is him hitting a three point shot. I think in the third quarter of the first game he scored every single point on his team. It was pretty impressive.

These kids are still learning and there were still a lot of mistakes, but there is definitely a lot of potential here. If you take the best players from each of the teams that were playing, they are going to have a decent squad by the time they get to high school.

At some point @mrsbozz and I need to make it back down to this area so we can watch his older brother and younger sister play on their teams. Those games usually go pretty quickly too, so it isn't a bad waste of a Saturday morning. Plus it is important for them to see that we support them. It's always fun watching young talent as well. There are some kids that you can just tell are going to be really good players when they get older.
