It was an absolute heartbreak of a nothing game on Friday night as my wife and I watched our niece play what will be her last basketball game in her home gym. I say it was a heartbreaking game because yes, she does have a lot of good memories in that gym, and yes, they did lose, but honestly, she is kind of over it.
I didn't realize when we drove down to Ohio this past weekend that we were going to be watching her last home game. I actually didn't even realize it was her last game of the regular season until after the game was already over. I might have tried to get some more pictures or something.
I can't quite remember the final score, but they fell short by just two or three points to a team that is #2 in the state in their division right now. I think they could have won the game too. If they just had a little better coaching and a little more discipline.
As you can probably imagine, in my eyes, my niece is perfect. I am willing to admit, she makes some mistakes sometimes. On defense she is an absolute beast. I'm not kidding. She can give girls fits for how well and closely she guards them. On offense, she is about as unselfish of a player as you can imagine. In fact, there are times she should really be taking shots instead of passing the ball away. I wouldn't be shocked to learn that she is probably the assist leader on her team.
However, sometimes she makes some bad passes. I don't now if it's her fault or the other players fault for not being there, but the ball gets turned over a lot.
That has always been an issue with this whole team. They could be so good with a bit more direction and discipline.
What absolutely continues to drive me crazy is the number of three point shots these girls shoot. Fans seem to have a short memory though as much as most people complain about bad shots, all it takes is one that makes it and they seem to forget about all the missed ones. It's like when you talk about a baseball player and you only talk about their home run numbers.
Right, but how many times did they strike out? Isn't there a saying about Babe Ruth that he was the home run leader, but he was also the strike out leader in the same season? Whether that is true or not I will leave to you to Google.
It sounds like the team they play tomorrow night isn't that good and it should be an easy win for my nieces team. They do have a tendency to play below their skill level sometimes, so we will see. This other team is playing to prove something. Will we be?
