Loons Get The Easter Sweep!

As I mentioned in the post from my main account (@bozz), @mrsbozz and I had the chance to attend a minor league baseball game this past weekend. It's something she has been doing the last couple of years for the staff at her building in the public school district we work for. These trips wouldn't be possible without the support from the local Native American tribe that operates a casino near our school district.

We are fairly lucky that we have such a nice facility near where we live and work. The cost of the suite for this evening was something like $300. When you consider a suite holds something like 20 to 30 people, it actually ends up being pretty cheap if you had a group of people you wanted to share one with.

Thankfully, the cost is covered through the grant. Likewise, the grant also covers the cost of food which usually ends up costing more than the price of the suite. The only thing the staff has to pay for themselves is their alcoholic beverages. It probably wouldn't be a good luck if we were paying for that with district money!

Given how early it is in the season, it was pretty empty at the park for this game. At one point a thunderstorm rolled through and the place pretty much cleared out completely except for the folks like us in suites. The Great Lakes Loons are a minor league affiliate for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In this weekend series they were playing the Dayton Dragons who are a minor league affiliate for the Cincinnati Reds.

It was a very good weekend for the Loons. They won the game we attended 7 to 2, then they won the game on Saturday night 5 to 4. Finally, on Easter Sunday they had a big 8 to 4 win over Dayton to sweep the weekend series.

Actually, as I look a the scores now, it appears it was actually a six game series that started back on Tuesday. Dayton won the Tuesday and Thursday game, but the Loons were able to grab the overall victory.

While it is usually the major league parks and teams that get all the attention, these minor league parks can be really awesome as well. They often have some pretty good food and the price of concessions is usually a little cheaper than what you find at the big parks.

If you ever get a chance to visit one of these little parks for a game, you should absolutely do it. This facility actually holds trade shows and events like weddings, and prom for high schools. It's a really nice place and honestly hard for me to believe it has been around since 2007.

That seems so long ago now!

I think I prefer minor league baseball over the big leagues. There is less ripping off of the consumer as far as concessions are concerned and parking is a breeze.

Yes, you are totally right! Parking was still $7, but that's a steal compared to what they charge down in Detroit around Commerica. I was also able to get two beers for like $16 at Dow Diamond and down in the MLB it's that much for one beer!
