After the first day of games my bracket wasn't looking too bad. In fact, I was in a tie for second place in the one pool I had entered my bracket into. Now that the weekend is over, my bracket looks a bit more like that disheveled hooker strolling down the strip in Vegas looking for some cash to score her next hit.
It's bad; not broken bad, but still bad.
That doesn't mean it wasn't close though. As you might recall, I have Duke vs. Florida in the final game with Florida winning it all. They had a bit of a close scrape the other day though with UConn and only won that game by two points. There have actually been some pretty close games lately that are finally starting to make things a bit interesting.
Oddly enough, I don't think there has been a single overtime game yet. Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I don't think I am though.
We are now on a bit of a break until next weekend when the Sweet 16 games get played and then we transition right into the Elite Eight games. Somewhere along the line, people stopped calling it the Elite Eight, and I am not sure why. When you look at the bracket, they simply call it the round of 8, but the other rounds have their fancy names like Sweet 16 and Final Four. I'm not really sure what's up with that.
Anyway, Louisville losing to Auburn really messed up the South left of my bracket. In that region it was the Texas A&M loss to Michigan that really threw things for a loop. I had Texas A&M making it to the Final Four. That one kind of hurts. It doesn't help that it was at the hands of Michigan too. It's funny how you can always expect Ann Arbor to ruin your weekend. I really can't stand them.
The other sad thing is, if they beat Auburn and Michigan State beats Ole Miss they will have to play each other again. I honestly don't think anyone wants to see that. The fact is, the odds are stacked against MSU at this point and that isn't a feeling I like. Michigan State won the two regular season meetings against Michigan, so the law of averages would tell you that they are due for a loss. I really don't want to see that happen in the national tournament. I had Iowa State beating Ole Miss anyway. Ouch.
Speaking of Michigan State, they had a rough game against New Mexico last night. At least for the first half. I had to get to bed, but it seems they turned things around for the second half.
My big misses in the West section of the bracket were St. John's losing to Arkansas. I had St. John's in the Elite Eight. I also didn't have Maryland making it this far, but man that was a great game against Colorado State. Probably one of the best of the tournament so far.
In the East, I am doing pretty good even though some of the ancillary teams aren't quite what I expected. I was spot on with Duke vs. Arizona in the Sweet 16 though.
I also did pretty well with BYU facing Alabama in the Sweet 16. The road they took to get there wasn't exactly right, I had Vandy doing a lot better, but the end result is the same. This is probably my best section of the bracket overall.
Finally, in the Midwest, The Houston/Purdue match up I got half right. I didn't expect Purdue to beat McNeese as handily as they did. It was a definite shocker for me. Kentucky vs. Tennessee was kind of a fate match up though. I didn't do too bad in this section of the bracket either. From here on out it only gets harder.
I'm actually off the chart now in 53rd place. That's a long fall from being tied for second...

I never really do the whole bracket thing but if I did i would pick Florida going all the way just because they are my alma mater. I was never really as big of a basketball fan as football though.
Oh really? That is cool. I went to a local State University, so I don't really have a cool alma mater like that! Florida has a good team this year. They had a close scrape with UConn, but they are no joke!
