We are now fully into the regular season games and conference play has been quite good to the Michigan State Spartans so far. Despite what my early recaps will show, they now find themselves squarely in the twelfth spot in the top 25. They have played three games since I last talked about them and as I said before, they are doing quite well.
It's been pretty fun to watch them play so far this year. I just hope they can keep the same energy they have now when they are faced with a bit more adversity. The schedule so far has been a little weak and the real test will be when they face Illinois this coming weekend.
There were three games in the top 25 last Thursday and they were all in the Big 10. Ohio State had a really close game against (15) Oregon, but they just fell short 73 to 71. I was watching the end of that game because it was on before the Michigan State game and it was quite exciting.
(16) Michigan State had a pretty easy time beating Washington in their game 88 to 54. It was a blood bath to be honest.
Friday night there was only one game in the top 25 and it was another Big 10 game. Maryland had a huge upset over (22) UCLA 79 to 61.
Saturday brought us a massive sixteen games in the top 25. USC toppled (13) Illinois with a 82 to 72 victory. (2) Auburn had a close call, but edged past South Carolina 66 to 63. Meanwhile, I was watching the (3) Iowa State vs. Texas Tech game and the Red Raiders came so close to getting the upset, but fell short in overtime 85 to 84.
Georgia was hungry for an upset too and they beat (17) Oklahoma 72 to 62. Those were the last of the upsets on Saturday, but (5) Alabama had a big game beating (10) Texas A&M 94 to 88, and (6) Kentucky beat (14) Mississippi 95 to 90.
Sunday while most people were watching football, there were also four top 25 games on. Once again they were all in the Big10. (16) Michigan State had a big win over a Northwestern team that tends to give them fits 78 to 68. Thankfully now that Boo Buie is gone, they might have an easier time against the Wildcats. He was a player that definitely had the Spartans number.
Monday there were no games in the top 25.
However, Tuesday there were nine games in the top 25. Illinois bounced back from their upset loss to take down Indiana 94 to 69. (21) Ole Miss upset (4) Alabama 74 to 64, and Missouri shocked (5) Florida in a close 83 to 82 game. Arizona didn't want to be left out either and they beat (25) Baylor 81 to 70.
Last night we had six games in the top 25.
(12) Michigan State had a good game against Penn State beating them 90 to 85. They were pretty dominant in the first part of the game and ultimately this is a good home win for the Spartans. The sole upset of the night last night came from UNLV taking down (22) Utah State 65 to 62.
No offense to Penn State, but like I said, Michigan State sees their first real competition of the regular season when they face Illinois at home on Sunday this weekend. I'm looking forward to that match up!
