RE: Getting the Facts Right: The First Step in Biblical Change

(edited)

One thing about biblical that stood out in me is its goal: the goal is not just to gather data and information about the counselee's situation, but to analyze that information with biblical lens in order to arrive at a biblical solution. This is what makes biblical counseling different from secular and approaches in Christian psychology. Biblical counseling does not depends on human wisdom and knowledge, theories, or subjective reasoning, but seeks to understand people and their problems from a biblical perspective. This first step makes it challenging as one should not jump into conclusions or solutions, but must patiently understand the heart, behavior, circumstances, and spiritual condition of the person. At the same time, the counselor must carefully compare these things with biblical truth. Biblical counseling is really challenging as it requires both compassion and discernment. A counselor should lovingly listen to the counselee while also faithfully pointing them to God’s perspective about their situation.
