The feast days of Saints Pancras, Servatius, and Boniface are May 12–14. Traditionally, they are called the “Ice Men.” In our part of the world, those days marked the last gasp of winter before spring. Of course, that was before today's climate change.
These three saints lived in different eras and had absolutely nothing in common other than their faith in Christ. Their feast days happened to fall on the same day in the Christian calendar entirely by chance.

Specifically, Pancras is said to have been executed around the year 304 for his persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Diocletian. He must have been about 15 years old. He is considered the patron saint of children and young people, especially young knights.
Churches dedicated to St. Pancras are very rare. There are only two in the Czech Republic today. And only one has ceased to exist—though it was actually just a chapel.
The more famous of the two churches is shown in the first photo.

According to archaeologists, construction of the church began in the 12th century. It has weathered the storms of our history: wars, uprisings, looting, and destruction. It was last demolished in 1757.

Every Prague resident knows where Pankrác is. But what many don’t know is that Pankrác has not legally existed since 1854. That year, it was merged with the town of Nusle. And Nusle was incorporated into Prague in 1922.
Pankrác is now just a surviving local name. And that’s the name of the metro station.
There’s also an interesting connotation. In 1889, a state prison—which is still in operation today—was completed in Pankrác. It isn’t the oldest, but it is certainly well-known.
If you say that someone was in Valdice, Mírov, Ruzyně, Bory, or Pankrác, it’s clear that they were in prison. If you sent someone to Bohnice or Kateřinky, you’d be sending them to a psychiatric hospital.
I have no idea if similar connotations exist in other languages. Probably yes.

There's nothing particularly interesting about that church. It's still in use today. There's a park on one side and a school on the other. You can take pictures from the park, but I didn't try to sneak onto the school grounds. Plus, there are tall trees all around it.
If I wanted to take some better photos, I’d have to come here between late fall and early spring, when the trees are bare. But why would I come here? I’m 60 years old. And I’ve been living in Prague for 60 years. And this is the first time I’ve ever stopped by this church.
I think there are many more interesting places in Prague that I haven’t been to yet and that I want to visit.

Proč je Pankrác Pankrácem?
Svatí Pankrác, Servác a Bonifác mají svátek 12.-14.5. Tradičně se se jim říká ledoví muži. Na zmíněné dny připadal v našich zeměpisných šířkách poslední záchvěv zimy před jarem. To ovšem bývalo před dnešní klimatikou změnou.
Ti tři světci žili v různých dobách a neměli spolu kromě víry v Krista vůbec nic společného.
A Nusle byly přivtěleny roku 1922 ku Praze.
Z Pankráce je jen přežívající místní název. A jmenuje se tak stanice metra.
Existuje i zajímavá konotace.
Netuším, jestli i v jiných jazycích existují podobné konotace.
A 60 let žiji v Praze.
