They certainly have a lot of Spanish influence that persists to this very day in their culture, and Tagalog has many similarities to Spanish. The Spanish Empire that had remained evaporated after the Spanish American War in 1898, which led to US influence in the Philippines until after World War II. Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and many others are still US territories until this day.
