#BeerSaturday 320 - Evil Corporation Brewing!

Being The Blockchain Beerologist definitely has its perks. Among them is the opportunity to tour breweries from across the flat globe and share it with the world. When I am not globetrotting and chugging pints, my fridge looks like a colourful mosaic of regional craft beer I enjoy with the #beersaturday alliance of #beer bloggers on #hive.

This week, I take you with me on a tour of one of Calgary, Alberta's newest and most sinister craft breweries!

Evil Corporation Brewing

Allow me to transport you from your comfy pub seat into the devious brewing lair of Evil Corporation Brewing https://evilcorpbrewing.com/ hidden inconspicuously in Canada. We are visiting the newly-opened HQ and taproom at 1220 20 Ave SE Calgary, Alberta to be exact.

Upon approaching the facility, you are not overtly alerted to the evil within as it appears to be a neat, unassuming craft brewery augmented by a nice patio with subtle branding and a nice dark/modern colour theme.

Upon entry, you are escorted initially into a clean, bright bottle/can shop posing as a laboratory soon to be filled with all kinds of beer and branded merch.

A little further on, you are welcomed to the facilities through a pleasantly menacing hallway that leads to what will be the boardroom where all kinds of deliciously nefarious plans can be laid.

Our Guides

IMG_8659.jpg

Before we get too ahead of ourselves, allow me to introduce our hosts. On the left is my Alberta concierge and host extraordinaire known as The Great @shpaget who joined #hive back in 2018 with me and is too invested in taking over the world to invest time in a blog. The great news is his colleague is none other than co-founder/co-owner Dan Piekut who has graciously appeared to indoctrinate us in his newly-founded corporate front. Years of home-brewing and scheming with like-minded company colleagues and their evil plan has culminated in this corrupt convergence.

Brewing Lab

IMG_8662.jpg

Dan let us in on the plan that brought the brewing mindshare to this point in the story and welcomed us into the brewing laboratory where all of the magic happens. Trendily illuminated and resourcefully functional were the immediate impressions I felt when the vault doors thundered closed behind us. Some of the latest brewing technology with a surprising portability to it so that the scaled down brew floor can move and flex with the operation.

Movable bright tanks in varying sizes so that big production can be achieved while leaving room for experimental brewing and progressive trials to push innovation.

IMG_8665.jpg

The #Beerologist in me was wowed by some of the compact, scaled down production and how so much could be done from malt processing through brewing all the way to semi-automated labelling and canning. You can almost hear Dan's evil chuckling as he lets us know our days will be numbered if we leak the secrets to the unsuspecting public. I love the fact they are able to can and brand their own tins for greater distribution. This would fit in my kitchen!

IMG_8674.jpg

After signing the NDA in blood to assure we would not give away all their secrets, it was back to the office for a flight. The Great Shpaget had ordered our potions and appears to be happy about the ascension we were about to experience.

IMG_8677.jpg

Following the evil scientist theme, the flights samples come in the form of test tubes of deliciousness. From left to right I opted for:

  • Niepatism New England IPA (Citra, Galaxy, Mosaic and Amarillo hops!)
  • Jalapenal Code jalapeno pilsner
  • Brutality brut IPA
  • APR rose pislner with apricot and hibiscus

IMG_8680.jpg

For a quick rundown, how can I not love the NIEPatism when it boasts all of my preferred IPA hops? Brutality was a very well done brut which always surprises me with the dryness and bold taste when done right. The Jalapenal Code was the wild card but they nailed the balance of jalapeno taste and heat into a subtle yet undeniable warm aftertaste for this great beer.

Pictured above is the colour test on the Rose pilsner. Tasty but not overdone with additives, slightly sweet without making it taste like a shandy, and full bodied enough to make you look twice at the soft hue coming through the giant test tube. I don't often say I would taste all of these beers again but I really can't pick a favourite here. I chose wisely on this flight!

The New Tap Room

IMG_8670.jpg

As mentioned earlier, this facility was unveiled to the public only weeks ago so it feels refreshingly new with deliberate style and feel fit to please the snootiest hipster. Taps on the column in the middle of the room are a nice touch as are the dark colouring and adjustable neon highlights.

IMG_8660.jpg

The patio feels almost like the corporate box at a soccer/football stadium complete with real turf reclaimed from a local pitch. A great place to enjoy a pint or 2 rain or shine.

IMG_8675.jpg

The theme of the decor may appeal to folks on Hive with the comb-shaped design elements but they have a deeper scientific meaning. Part of the brain trust is a self-proclaimed science buff and he Fibonacci Sequence hints that the beer goes a lot deeper than just the great taste.

IMG_8673.jpg

The entire experience of touring the facility leaves you immersed in the whimsical corporate theme and so many beer styles to explore. A stop back in the bottle shop is a must and it is deviously difficult to leave with just one of the 4-packs available.

IMG_8676.jpg

Evil Corporation gets my coveted seal of approval not only for the VIP treatment experience in the guided tour. It feels like a well-conceived concept wrapped in a fun entrepreneurial endeavor, launched modestly with this facility that is scaled for both variety and experience.

Successful experiment Dan and Evilcorp! I can't wait to visit again and devise a scheme to get your beer here to Ontario!
