Burntisland back streets, trains, churches and an upside down wind surfing enthusiast!

Hello Hello Hivians

Do you focus on the main streets when you go visit a town. Well in this article we are going along the back streets of Burntisland in the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 to the 1500s!

These are all taken in the last week of December, so although it is Winter it was dry and actually quite mild, nevertheless ...

Wrap up warm and let's go!

Burntisland back streets, trains, churches and an upside down wind surfing enthusiast!.png

image.png

While we go I shall drop some funfacts about Burtisland...

FunFact ... Burtisland has the 13th oldest golf course in the world!

It is not really surprising as Burntisland is in the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland where gold was invented.

Here we have the High Street of a typical small Scottish coastal town, population approx 7 and a bit thousand!

wed walk 27 dec 8851.png

Did you see the blue sky, it is almost as blue as the sap on the map below, a screenshot from my pinmapple account.

image.png

So we are going to get off the High Street. One gret thing about Burntisland High Street is that it is thriving! They have award winning butcher, fishmonger greengrocer and a whole host of other shops.

wed walk 27 dec 8853.png

The steeple is on an old church, which has been repurposed into some sheltered housing with a resident warden.

However, we are going the back streets and then means hanging a right now.

wed walk 27 dec 8854.png

We actualy have come up closer to the train station and funnily enough there are two churches behind this picture.

Do you see tree on the left with the crazy hair do, blame it on the wind, but if you look just below the branches you can see...

wed walk 27 dec 8856.png

... a funky looking older building on the hill. I bet they get some view.

Thankfully I brought my camera so was able to zoom in, and as you can see later on, I was rather glad that I had!
image.png
image.png

Here is the first of the two churches that I mentioned.

Many people actually have no idea of the significance of this church at all. I never did to be honest.

wed walk 27 dec 8864.png

Burntisland parish church was built in 1592! I did say we were going back in time to the 1500s after all.

It was one of if not the first church that was built in Scotland after the Scottish Reformation.

It is Category A listed for its architectural and historical importance. The building itself is square, how funky is that!

wed walk 27 dec 8859.png

The Scottish Reformation was the process by which Scotland broke with the Papacy and developed a predominantly Calvinist national Kirk (church), which was strongly Presbyterian in its outlook. It was part of the wider European Protestant Reformation that took place from the 16th century.

I just love the gates, love the old ship, it reminds me of the BBC children's TV program Blue Peter.

But they were closed!

image.png

I have never been inside but one day I will get there.

In the meantime I tried to take you to see the back of it.
image.png

wed walk 27 dec 8869.png

Standing guard though was this cute wee make blackbird.

I asked him what he was looking at...

See for yourself was his reply!

wed walk 27 dec 8873.png

The view over the Firth of Forth.

wed walk 27 dec 8874.png

I tried to be nosey and see what was being lifted on and off the tug boat but the trees were in the way.

wed walk 27 dec 8875.png

Pallets pallets and more pallets, I think the company is called Scott's but there are so many pallets, all wooden of course which is a big plus!

The headland is where we are going to get around to next, well eventually that is!
image.png

wed walk 27 dec 8882.png

To get there we had to go back past the front of the churches!

Don't you just love older architecture. The history associated with it I find fascinating.

Of course the local NEDS disagree and daub shite all over it!

wed walk 27 dec 8888.png

We are parallel with the High Street now, and this used to an old primary school building. Now I think it is a block of apartments. The other side will have a great view of the sea!

wed walk 27 dec 8889.png

There is a small hall that is next to that building.

It is used by one group.

The clue is in the picture, can you guess what group uses the hall?

wed walk 27 dec 8891.png

Now we are going past the Links Park, not really a park but just a heap of green, although in the summer they have a the carnies or carnival with street rides for a couple of months!
image.png
wed walk 27 dec 8896.png

We are nearly there, can you see those rocks, see the waves crashing on them, yes it was windy!

That island actually is in the bay, and when it is low tide you can walk out there, that was a godsend during lockdown I can tell you!

wed walk 27 dec 8898.png

There I thought I would show the boy in the Firth of Forth for reference, it was kind of choppy out there!

wed walk 27 dec 8903.png

The seagulls did have a problem, but then again they rarely do.

This was them floating in towards the Bay of Burntisland, look how peaceful it looks.

wed walk 27 dec 8904.png

That then is the back walk to the Bay, and of course there is another church in the distance. The water was calm as it is secluded.

wed walk 27 dec 8921.png

One great thing about the East coast of Scotland is that many of the train tracks are right beside the sea so you tend to have a great view (in the light of course).

image.png
wed walk 27 dec 8922.png

Oh look what we have here in the water!

wed walk 27 dec 8907.png

He actually was motoring along at one point, and the board comes up out of the water.

wed walk 27 dec 8909.png

He was okay of course, but I thought it would make for a good picture with him doomed in front of the cemetery!

image.png

There we have our wee tour of Burntisland back streets, trains, churches and an upside down water enthusiast!

This post is also my first walk of 2024 for #wednesdaywalk which was started by the wonderful @tattoodjay.

Wow, those pallets are like a Pintrest crafters dream! They could make so many hipster furniture items with them! This looks like it was a really great walk around a quite charming town!

Kite surfer taking a plunge right in front of cemetery, one of those you think you'll never get timing to perfection!

So many 'kirks' up yonder one could never get to visit them all, each comes dated, plus history that is normally interesting in one way or another. So many steeples so few peoples...., now many stand empty which is sad!

Enjoyable visit, great seeing blue skies in winter months.

Lots of them are no longer churches, in fact I read about one that has been deserted for a few years and now is unstable condition and threatening road traffic not that far away.

Hehe you know kirk sounds South African to me!

Most our churches are still up and running, not sure of attendance numbers I have not been myself in quite some time. Sounds familiar as our Afrikaans use the work 'kerk' slight variation, same place!

They have some very entertaining streets in Burntisland, I have always been attracted to windsurfing here they practice it on several beaches, I do not know if my ideal view for that sport is in front of a cemetery 😅

These are a lot of pictures boss boss. I enjoyed the tour and the funny remarks as well.

Those church buildings are grand too bad I was born in the 1900's and not the 1500's. It would have been a fancy affair attending church in petite ball gowns hahaha

I dont think I have ever seen so many pallets stacked up like that

whenever i visited a new place I always would head off the main popular streets and check out the back streets I feel you get a real feel for the city that way

So much history there for sure

Wishing you and years all the best for 2024 and Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)

Oh dearie me Ed, that last photo of the kite surfer disappearing under the water and the cemetery as a backdrop is so funny!
It looks like a fascinating town with all the historical buildings, and all the 'kirks'. Funny, in my mother tongue a church is known as a 'kerk'.
The weather seems to be quite confused worldwide. It's the height of summer here and yet we've had the odd chilly day, not that I'm complaining as our summers are awful!

Hehe Lizzie I did take quite a few pics of the kite surfer so had to include that one as it tickled me too!

Yeah I think kirk and kerk are probably closely related pronounciation wise!

Wow! Thanks for this very original window I to Scotland! These aren't the pics we normally see. I've Ben to Edinburgh once, but I'd love to see more of it!
